Mortal Kombat 1 is an upcoming fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. It will be the twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series and a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 (2019). Mortal Kombat 1 will be the series' second reboot, following Mortal Kombat (2011).[3] The game is set to be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19, 2023.

Gameplay

Mortal Kombat 1 has been confirmed to feature a story mode, online multiplayer with rollback netcode, and offline gameplay. The game will introduce a feature called Kameo Fighters, which will provide assistance to the player during fights. These characters will be separate from the main roster, and chosen before each fight. Additionally, the Air Kombat combo system which was featured in both Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and the action spin-off Shaolin Monks returns, and is being refined for this game.[4]

Characters

As of the game's announcement date, it has been revealed to feature reimagined versions of Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Smoke, Rain and Kenshi. Shang Tsung will be offered as a pre-order bonus.[4] Six additional characters and five kameo fighters are planned for post-launch release via the "Kombat Pack" downloadable content.[4]

Kameo Fighters

Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players. These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters.[4] Some characters can serve as both kameo fighters and base roster fighters. Guest characters can even serve as kameo fighters.[5]

Development

After ceasing support for Mortal Kombat 11, NetherRealm Studios disclosed that it was working on a new project in July 2021. Johnny Cage voice actor Andrew Bowen indicated that the 12th installment was in development in a hastily deleted tweet.[6] In February 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced during a 2022 fourth-quarter earnings call that a twelfth installment in the series was set to be released later in that year.[7]

On May 18, 2023, NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat 1 with a release date of September 19, 2023. It is a reboot of the series and is set in the New Era timeline created by Liu Kang after he attained godhood in Mortal Kombat 11.[8] NetherRealm Studios announced that those who preorder any version of the game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will receive access to a beta in August, and after the game launches, NetherRealm Studios will provide cross-play and cross-progression.[9] A skin for Johnny Cage based on the likeness of Jean-Claude Van Damme will be available as premium downloadable content.[10] The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game are being developed by NetherRealm Studios, the Windows version by QLOC, and the Nintendo Switch version by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive.[4]
