"My Prerogative" is a 1988 single by R&B singer Bobby Brown (see 1988 in music). The second single from Brown's second solo album Don't Be Cruel, "My Prerogative" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and is among Brown's most successful recordings. The song was covered in 2004 by Pop singer Britney Spears for her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative compilation, and released the song as a single during the third quarter of 2004. It was also covered by British punk/Indie band Selfish Cunt, albeit under the title "Bobby".
Overview
"My Prerogative" was written by Brown with new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin, the song's producer. The song's lyrics reflected Brown's bad-boy image, and were representative of the new jack swing sound popular in the late-1980s. Following the top ten success of "Don't Be Cruel," "My Prerogative" earned Gold sales, and became Brown's first and only number one single on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. The track was also a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and reached the top ten of the Hot Dance Club Play chart.
On the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Bobby Brown's original version rocketed 61-45, the week of November 5, 1988, just as "Don't Be Cruel" was descending from its two-week stint in the Top 10. "Prerogative" steadily climbed the charts, and was stalled at #2 for three weeks, under Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", before it finally reached #1 the week of January 14, 1989, becoming the first new #1 of 1989.
Spears' cover was successful in the U.S. into the Billboard it did peak at number ten on the Billboard Pop 100 Singles chart and sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100 However, her version did peak at number two on the Hot Digital Tracks, and was a top ten or no.1 hit in several other countries w/c makes her version much succesful internationally. As digital downloads didn't count in the Hot 100 till early 2005, Britney didn't enter the Hot 100.
Directed by Jake Nava, the music video for Spears' version of "My Prerogative," depicting a wedding reception party for Spears and her real-life husband Kevin Federline, was well-received. It was later chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the best video of 2004. Ironically, Muchmusic's Fromage chose it as the worst video of 2004.
Spears' cover was more successful than Brown's in the UK selling a total of 180,000 copies.
This marks the return of the man seen in the video in "Oops! I did it again!", Britney Spears 2nd album. (Seen on the alternate veiw version of the video on the Greatest Hits DVD)
