NCT 2018 Empathy (stylized in uppercase) is the debut studio album by South Korean boy group NCT. It was released on March 14, 2018, by SM Entertainment and iriver Inc. The album marks the appearance of the group's three new members Kun, Jungwoo and Lucas.[1] The album contains a total of fourteen tracks, with twelve of them released as singles from 2016 to 2018.[2]
The album peaked at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and has sold over 350,000 physical copies as of August 2019.
Background
On February 5, 2018, SM Entertainment released two videos titled "NCT Yearbook #1" and "NCT Yearbook #2". The members that have already debuted in previous units and three new members, Lucas, Jungwoo, and Kun, were shown in the videos.[3][4] On February 6, 2018, it was revealed that the group would release their first large-scale project and a studio album. 18 members including the previous sub-units, NCT U, NCT Dream, and NCT 127, would participate in the new comeback. The project, titled NCT 2018, and the album were scheduled to be released in March. It was also stated that six music videos would be released leading up to the release of the album.[5]
The album, titled Empathy, was released on March 14, 2018.[6] The release was done through many music portals, including MelOn (South Korea) and iTunes (internationally).[7][8] Six new songs were released alongside five previously released singles, an intro and outro track, and an extended bonus track.[8]
Promotion
Prior to the album release, three songs were revealed through the release of their music video. "Boss" was released on February 18 by NCT U with members Taeyong, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Jungwoo, Lucas and Mark.[9] On February 26, "Baby Don't Stop", performed by NCT U with members Taeyong and Ten was released.[10] NCT Dream’s "Go", was released on March 4.[11]
"Touch", performed by NCT 127, was released in conjunction with the album on March 13.[12]
The music video for "Yestoday" was later released on April 1.[13]
The music video for "Black On Black" was released on April 18, and featured all 18 members, marking the official debut of Kun.[14]
Commercial performance
The album reached 203,000 pre-orders prior to release.[15][16]
NCT 2018 Empathy entered and peaked at number two on the Gaon Album Chart, on the chart issue dated March 11–17, 2018.[17] It also entered at number three on the monthly chart of March 2018, for selling 330,540 physical copies.[18]
