National Identity Card of Nepal is a federal level Identity card with unique identity number for each person that can be obtained by citizens of Nepal, based on their biometric and demographic data.[2] The data is collected by the Department of National ID and Civil Registration (DONIDCR), under the jurisdiction of Home ministry.[3] The contract to process and deliver the cards was signed in 2018 with IDEMIA.[4]
This card will feature a unique number, photo, personal Information and 10 fingerprints of the bearer. Upon full implementation, this card is to replace the current "Nepalese Citizenship" and it will be used for National Identity, personal identity, as Voter ID Card and as a Social Security Card through its unique number. This card will not replace other documents like Passport, Driver License.[5]
The project began in the fiscal year 2075/76, with initial distributions in districts like Panchthar and to government employees. The Department of National ID and Civil Registration (DoNIDCR) now oversees the program, which is being implemented in phases, starting with 110,000 cards in Rupandehi District.
Application Process
[edit]To apply for the National ID Card, individuals must be at least 16 years old and provide the following documents:
- Original citizenship card
- Migration certificate (if applicable)
- Marriage certificate (if spouse's name is not on the citizenship card)
- Passport (if available)
How to Apply Online
[edit]- Visit the official DoNIDCR website.
- Select "Login for Individuals" and enter your registered mobile number.
- Complete the application form with accurate personal and family details.
- Choose a location for your biometrics appointment.
- Attend the appointment at the designated District Administration Office with required documents.
Offline Application
[edit]For offline applications, visit your local District Administration Office or designated centers in Kathmandu, such as Rastriya Sabha Griha or Narayanhiti Durbar Museum.
Checking Your Application Status
[edit]To check the status of your application, send an SMS with “S [16-digit application number]” to 30001, or visit the Citizen Portal on the DoNIDCR website (currently under maintenance).
The National ID Card is expected to facilitate various official processes, including a centralized KYC system for banks and easier access to services like e-passports. While distribution is ongoing, many citizens are still awaiting their cards due to a slow processing timeline. Keep an eye on updates as the government works to expand distribution and improve efficiency.[6]
