Native is the third studio album by American rock band OneRepublic. It was released on March 22, 2013 in Germany, March 25 worldwide except North America, and March 26 in North America.

Background and development

On February 4, 2012, OneRepublic announced via Twitter that their third studio album was scheduled for a fall of 2012 release, and that the band was hoping to release the lead single from the album around April or May 2012.

The band stated that they were "not rushing it", saying that the album "has to literally be the best thing we've ever done". The band subsequently announced songs entitled "Feel Again", "Life in Color", "What You Wanted", "Burning Bridges", "Let's Get Lost", "Counting Stars", "Preacher", "Something's Gotta Give", "Can't Stop", "Something I Need" and "I Lived".

In September 2012, the band announced that the album, entitled Native, would be released in November 2012, however its release was later delayed.

Singles

"Feel Again" was originally released as the lead single from the then-untitled Native on August 27, 2012.[1] A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the single was donated to Save the Children's Every Beat Matters campaign to support training frontline health workers around the world. The single reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and #59 on the Canadian Hot 100.[3]

"If I Lose Myself" was subsequently released afterwards as the second single and new official lead single from the album on January 8, 2013.[4]

Promotional singles

"What You Wanted" was released as a promotional single from the album on February 19, 2013, available to download on iTunes in the month leading up to the album's release on available listings of the album.[5]

Critical reception

Native received positive reviews from music critics. Matt Crane of Hellhound Music lauded the album, saying he was "emotionally moved [and] artistically blown away" by Native, and praised the "musical exploration, dense lyrical themes, emotional depth, and diverse instrumental execution" on the album.[6] Life of a Rock Star stated the songs on the album "added up to genius", and particularly complimented the songs "I Lived", "Something I Need", and "If I Lose Myself".[7] Haley Black of Highlight Magazine gave the album a rating of 3.5 out of 5, stated that OneRepublic "keeps producing catchy tunes that appeal to a wide range of listeners" with Native. Black praised the classic sound of the song "Au Revoir", and praised Tedder's "ridiculous set of pipes" were especially evident in the song "Burning Bridges", and stated that the two songs "represent the band's trademark sound", however criticized the "unnecessary amount of auto tune" on the tracks "Can't Stop" and "Don't Look Down", and stated that Native would have "exceeded all expectations" if the songs on the album were more stripped down.[8] A user rating on AlbumJams.com gave the album an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.[9] Album Review TV gave the album a rating of 3.5 out of 5, saying that with Native, OneRepublic remained consistent with their "very good and well-crafted" music, and praised the diverse instrumentation on the album, and said that the band was a stand-out group. They praised the tempo of the album, and complimented the songs "Counting Stars", "Feel Again", "If I Lose Myself", "What You Wanted", "Burning Bridges", and "Preacher" however stated that some songs "didn't quite hit the right target", such as the tracks "Light It Up", "Au Revoir", "Can't Stop", and "Don't Look Down", and said that some of the songs were repetitive and inconsistent.[10] Zone Wifi's Surya Komal gave the album a rating of 3.5 out of 5, praising the songs "If I Lose Myself", "Feel Again", "What You Wanted", "Au Revoir", "Burning Bridges", and "Preacher".[11]
