"Outrageous"
Song

"Outrageous" is the fourth and final single released from Britney Spears' fourth studio album In the Zone. The single was released during the second quarter of 2004.

"Outrageous" was both written and produced by popR&B artist R. Kelly, who also offers vocals to the track.

Music video

The single was supposed to be coupled with a music video directed by previous Spears collaborator Dave Meyers ("Lucky", "Boys"); however, Spears sustained a knee injury during a dance routine and could not complete it. Clips of the video feature a cameo appearance by Snoop Dogg.

Shot in New York City, New York, the supposed-to-be music video for "Outrageous" that is included on the Greatest Hits: My Prerogative DVD starts in the middle of the song where Snoop Dogg is seen playing basketball with a group of gangsters. Suddenly, Britney interrupts and ruins the game. She proceeds to flirt with Snoop Dogg before jumping into his arms and licking his beard during the line "until I vow to keep it forever." (This is only shown on the Greatest Hits DVD). In the next scene, she and her dancers perform in a wet street, which is where she injures her knee.[1]

Chart performance

"Outrageous" performed very weakly on the charts and did not have an accompanying video to support it. The single peaked at number seventy-nine on the Billboard Hot 100; It also ranked considerably low on both Dance and Top 40 radio.

Interestingly enough, "Outrageous" received some airplay in late 2003 and early 2004, just before "Toxic" hit the airwaves. Although it had no impact on the latter's performance, the fact that an unpromoted track from the album was on the airwaves had a few people convinced that "Outrageous" was the actual new single by Britney Spears. The track "(I Got That) Boom Boom" had similar airplay around the same time.

So far it's her worst performance in Latin America, peaking at #100 for a week[2].

Trivia

  • This song was originally the theme for the 2004 film Catwoman but after Spears injured her knee, it was replaced quickly by Mis-teeq's Scandalous, which was the reason for the absence of a Catwoman soundtrack album. Although half-way through the film, a scene takes place at an opera house, where the instrumental for the "Junkie Xl's Dancehall Mix", released on the Greatest Hits: My Prerogative compilation, is clearly heard.
  • On 16 November 2004, in NCIS episode Terminal Leave when Agent DiNozzo and Todd are in the bathroom, Agent Kate Todd is heard listening to this single whilst in the shower and singing along to it, as does Agent Tony DiNozzo whilst he's brushing his teeth.
