Podhradí (German: Neuberg or Neuberg bei Asch) is a village and municipality in Cheb District in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. In 2006 the village had a population of 175.

Geography

Podhradí lies 5 kilometres north from , about 562 metres above sea level. Through the village flows Ašský potok.

It neighbour with to the south, with Doubrava and Kopaniny to the southeast, with Studánka to the north and with Kamenná to the west.

History

Podhradí was first mentioned in 1288. Until this year, Podhradí was property of Neuberg. After Albrech von Neuberg death, emperor Rudolph I of Bohemia handed Podhradí to lords of Plauen, as a fief. In 1392, village was inherited by Zedtwitz. Podhradí soon became a center of Aš-region.

In 1470-1490, an evangelic church was built here by Zedwitz.

After big fire in 1610, a castle Neuberg was seriously damaged. Family of Zedwitz fall apart, and individual stems moving to new chateaus in , Kopaniny, Doubrava, Smrčina and two chateas in Podhradí. From this moment, Podhradí wasn't centre of Aš-region anymore.

In 1717, a new school was built here.

In 1902, a Upper Chateau was destroyed in next big fire. Destroyed was also a local brewery. Under Chateau was destroyed few years later. In this days, a ruins of old castle Neuberg and Upper Chateau is still located here. Local council make efforts to save them, but, because of bad financial situation is a big problem.

Early 19th century, Podhradí was influence by growing textile industry. Population grows to almost 2000. After World War II and German transfer, village almost defunct. In 2006 the village had a population of 175.

The name of the village

Podhradí is from Pod which means under and hrad, which means castle; Podhradí means under the castle.
