Portola High School (PHS) is one of six public high schools in the Irvine Unified School District and is located in Irvine, California. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 2014 and opened in Fall 2016. The campus is situated on 43.3 acres of land and accommodates approximately 2,400 students.[2] The school mascot is the Bulldog. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control declared the ground safe in May 2016.[3]

Campus

Portola's campus was constructed to meet criteria established by the Collaborative for High Performance Schools. The school features

  • 720-seat performing arts theatre
  • 2,044-seat gymnasium with three full sized basketball courts
  • 8 tennis courts
  • 2 baseball and softball fields
  • An Olympic sized pool
  • 3,500-seat stadium

Volatile organic compounds have been detected in soil gas samples site wide, but on May 19, 2016 Portola High School site was declared safe by the California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC).

Student Body

In the 2016–17 academic year, only 9th grade students will attend Portola. In each successive year, a new grade level will be added, so that 9th and 10th grade students will attend in 2017–18, grades 9–11 will attend in 2018–19, and grades 9–12 will attend starting in the 2019–20 school year.

Neighborhoods Served

Students residing primarily in the northeastern area of the Irvine Unified School District attend Portola. Portola's geographical boundary covers the second largest surface area in the district, behind only that of University High School. Neighborhoods served include:[5]
