"Put Your Records On" is a song by English soul singer–songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae from her debut album, Corinne Bailey Rae (2006). Written by Rae, John Beck, and Steve Chrisanthou, it was released as the album's second single in February and early March 2006 throughout Europe and as the lead single in North America.

"Put Your Records On" was a commercial success, topping the UK R&B Chart and charting at number two on UK Singles Chart. The song has since become a major worldwide hit, reaching the Top 70 in the United States. It was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2007 Grammy Awards.

Song information

Produced by Steve Chrisanthou, the song debuted into the UK Singles Chart at number two and was kept off the top spot by Madonna's "Sorry". The song's opening line, "Three little birds sat on my window/And they tell me I don't need to worry", is a reference to Bob Marley & The Wailers' 1977 hit song "Three Little Birds".

"Put Your Records On" enjoyed a wealth of critical and commercial acclaim[citation needed] which helped the album achieve number one in its first week of release. The track topped the UK Official Download Chart and the UK R&B Singles Chart; it was also a hit on radio, reaching at least number two on the UK Airplay Chart. However, the single did not fare as well in the United States, peaking at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. As of March 1, 2006, Rae became only the second female solo act to top the UK Official Download Chart in history.[citation needed] It remains Bailey Rae's biggest hit single in the UK to date, and the only one to reach the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.

The acoustic version of this song was a featured Free Single of the Week on the Canadian and the US iTunes Store.

The song earned a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 2007.[1]

This song was covered many times in reality television programmes. On the sixth season of American Idol, semi-finalist Antonella Barba performed this song during the Top 16 week. Carly Rae Jepsen sang it on the fifth season of Canadian Idol during the Top 22 week. A year later on the ninth season of American Idol, finalist Katie Stevens covered the song during the top 20 week. Both their covers were released as live performance singles on the iTunes Store.

The song appears on the 2006 compilation album The Acoustic Album, as well as in the video games Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore and Band Hero.

The song is also featured in the 2009 film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel sung by The Chipettes and in the movie's soundtrack. This song was also featured in the popular 2006 film "Venus" with the Peter O'Toole.
