Background and composition
Most of my inspiration comes from sadness because it’s the emotion that sticks in the back of my mind and the easiest way to get things out is through music
— Lipa, "Dua Lipa On Falling In Love With Music and Growing Up Fast", Hunger TV.[1]
"Room for 2" is a midtempo dark and soulful ballad.[2][3][4][5] It was composed in 4
4 time in the key of A major, with a tempo of 76 beats per minute that has a "steadily" feel.[6][7] Lipa's vocals, which were described as "husky", "enveloping" and "siren-like", span from the low note of E3 to the high note of C♯5.[6][4][3][8] The song follows a A-F♯m-C♯m-B5 sequence.[6] The song slowly builds, with a pulsating beat and piano chimes.[5][4] It has a "banging" chorus with hypnotic vibes.[4] A "static and haunting" song, the outro features humming which gives a creepy vibe.[4]
Critical reception
A Bit of Pop Music said that Lipa "shows she is not a one trick pony with a welcome change of pace and vibe."[4] We Got This Covered wrote that the song "is diverse in all of the best ways possible"[5]
Music video
The song's music video was released on 3 November 2016, through Hunger TV.[9] Directed by Vicky Lawton, the video sees Lipa wandering around an interrogation room with CCTV footage on her.[8][3] In the video, Lipa wears leather thigh-high boots and a black hoodie.[3]
Live performances
Lipa performed "Room for 2" at the MTV setlist on 21 November 2016.[10] It was included in the set lists for Lipa's Hotter than Hell Tour and US and Europe Tour.
