Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra (English: Syed Putra Science Secondary School; abbreviated SMSTSP; formerly known as Sekolah Menengah Sains Perlis) is a premier and only boarding school Sekolah Berasrama Penuh located in Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia.The students bears the name SYED PUTRA. In 2010,the school was awarded with the Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi or High Performance School[1] title, a title awarded to the 20 schools in Malaysia that have met stringent criteria including academic achievement, strength of alumni, international recognition, network and linkages. The school is specialised in soccer, innovation and invention.[2] The school performance in the recent Penilaian Menengah Rendah (2013) is the best in Perlis and fourteenth ranking in Sekolah Berasrama Penuh with 76.92% students gaining straight A's with GPS 1.0526[3] [4] while for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia is the best in Perlis with 30 students obtaining straight A's.[5]

History

The school were founded in 1973, with the name Sekolah Menengah Sains Perlis. All students was riding on studying at Derma, Kangar with the first supervisor was Mr. B.P. Mr. Chopra and Senior Assistant. Othman bin Mat. In June 1974, all staff SMSPs. has moved to a new building in Behor Pulai. The school supervisor at that time was Mr. Othman bin Mat and First Assistance, Baharom bin Mohamad. The next Principals is the first appointed to lead the school, En. Abd. Rahim bin Abd. Majid which took place in September 1974. In 1998,the school have been grouped as one of the others 88 Smart Schools in Malaysia. The school were granted with Cluster School status in 2009 and is one of the first 20 schools that get the status of high performance schools in 2010.

Location

SMSTSP (formerly known as Sekolah Menengah Sains Perlis) is located in Padang Behor Pulai via Jalan Padang Behor, about two kilometres from Kangar, in a residential cum educational area, on a 12 hectares campus, near the educational institutions Maktab Perguruan Perlis and ILP.

Chronology of Establishment

  • January 1973: previously Known as Perlis Science Secondary School and temporarily based at Derma English Secondary School. 109 students.
  • 20 May 1974: moved to a new campus in Padang Behor Pulai.
  • January 1998: officially one of Malaysia's premier Smart Schools.
  • January 2001 : new two-storey Engineering building built near the girls' hostel.
  • 25 January 2010: one of national first batch of High-Performance Schools/Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi (SBT).
