Template:Contains Korean text Seventeen (Korean: 세븐틴), also stylized as SEVENTEEN or SVT, is a thirteen-member South Korean boy group formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2015. The group is separated into three different sub-units with different areas of specialization: a 'hip-hop unit', 'vocal unit', and 'performance unit'.

The group's members are deeply involved in the composition and production of their tracks and their choreography, leading to them being given a nickname as a "self-producing" idol group.[1]

History

Pre-Debut

Starting in 2013, Seventeen appeared in regular live broadcasts of a show called 17TV on the online streaming platform UStream. During broadcasts, fans were invited to watch Seventeen training in their practice room. The show had multiple seasons during which the trainees were introduced to the public, with some seasons ending in Like Seventeen concerts.[2][3][4]

Big Debut Plan

Prior to their debut Seventeen appeared as a group in the reality TV show Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan, broadcast on MBC between May 2–26, 2015. The show concluded with the group's debut showcase.[5]

2015: 17 Carat, Boys Be and Boys Wish

Seventeen debuted on May 26 with a live showcase, televised on MBC. They became the first male K-pop group to debut with a one-hour live showcase on a major broadcasting channel, with label-mates Lizzy and Raina from After School serving as MCs.[6] Three days later, their first EP 17 Carat was digitally released along with the music video for their title track "Adore U" (아낀다).[7] The physical album was released on June 2. Despite originating from a relatively small agency, the album ranked ninth on the Billboard World Albums chart a week after its release and peaked at eighth, staying on the chart for a total of eleven weeks.[8][9][10] 17 Carat later became the longest-charting K-pop album of the year in the US[11] and was the only rookie album to appear on Billboard's "10 Best K-pop Albums of 2015" ranking.[12][13]

On September 10, Seventeen's second EP Boys Be was released in two versions together with the music video for the title track, "Mansae". Pre-order sales for Boys Be surpassed 30,000 album copies,[14] with further sales confirming the group's popularity, as it became the highest selling rookie album of 2015. The album debuted at number one on Billboard's World Albums Chart[15] and earned the group awards at the Golden Disk Awards and the Seoul Music Awards.[16] Seventeen was the only K-Pop group on Billboard's "21 Under 21 2015: Music's Hottest Young Stars" list.[17] On December 4, a digital single titled "Q&A" was released by members S.Coups, Woozi and Vernon, featuring singer Ailee. The track was revealed to have been created the previous year by Woozi, long before the group's debut.[18]

Seventeen held a four-date concert series titled 2015 Like Seventeen – Boys Wish from the 24th to the 26th of December as an end-of-year celebration at Yongsan Art Hall in Seoul, for which all tickets sold out within one minute. After the concerts' success, Seventeen held two more concerts on February 13 and 14 entitled Like Seventeen – Boys Wish Encore Concert which sold out in five minutes.[19] At the second concert the official fanclub name Carat (Hangul: 캐럿) was announced.[20]

2016: Studio Album Love & Letter and First Tours

Seventeen's first full-length studio album Love & Letter was released at midnight local time on April 25, 2016. The album was released with dual Love and Letter versions, similarly to their previously released album Boys Be which also had two versions. The album sold over 150,000 copies prior to release - more than quadruple the amount of pre-orders for Boys Be - and charted in Japan despite having had no Japanese promotions. The music video for the title track, "예쁘다 (Pretty U)", was released on April 24 after the group's showcase.[21][22] The album debuted on Billboard's World Albums Chart at third place and "예쁘다 (Pretty U)" gave Seventeen their first win on a music show on May 4.[23]

Love & Letter was re-released as the album 아주 Nice (Very Nice) on July 4.[24] The music video for the title track, "Very Nice", got a million views within 24 hours of its release. The promotions are to be followed immediately by their 1st Asia Tour 2016 Shining Diamonds in August, which includes venues in Japan, Singapore, Australia and China.[25]

  • S.Coups (Korean: 에스.쿱스) was born Choi Seungcheol (Korean: 최승철) on (1995-08-08) August 8, 1995 (age 29) in Daegu, South Korea. He is the group leader and leader of the hip-hop unit. He was originally meant to debut with label mates NU'EST. [26]
  • Wonwoo was born Jeon Wonwoo (Korean: 전원우) on (1996-07-17) July 17, 1996 (age 28) in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. [27]
  • Mingyu was born Kim Mingyu (Korean: 김민규) on (1997-04-06) April 6, 1997 (age 27) in Anyang, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. [28]
  • Vernon (Korean: 버논) was born Hansol Vernon Choi (Korean: 최한솔) on (1998-02-18) February 18, 1998 (age 26) in New York, United States. [29]

Vocal Unit

  • Woozi (Korean: 우지) was born Lee Jihoon (Korean: 이지훈) on (1996-11-22) November 22, 1996 (age 27) in Busan, South Korea. He is the leader of the vocal unit, lead vocal and the producer of the group. [30]
  • Jeonghan was born Yoon Jeonghan (Korean: 윤정한) on (1995-10-04) October 4, 1995 (age 29) in Seoul, South Korea. He is the sub vocal, along with Joshua. [31]
  • Joshua (Korean: 조슈아) was born Hong Jisoo (Korean: 홍지수) on (1995-12-30) December 30, 1995 (age 28) in Los Angeles, California, United States. He is the sub vocal, along with Jeonghan. [32]
  • DK, also known as Dokyeom, (Korean: 도겸) was born Lee Seokmin (Korean: 이석민) on (1997-02-18) February 18, 1997 (age 27) in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He is the main vocal, along with Seungkwan. [33]
  • Seungkwan was born Boo Seungkwan (Korean: 부승관) on (1998-01-16) January 16, 1998 (age 26) in Jeju, Jejudo, South Korea. He is the main vocal, along with DK. [34]

  • Hoshi (Korean: 호시) was born Kwon Soonyoung (Korean: 권순영) on (1996-06-15) June 15, 1996 (age 28) in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He is the leader of the performance unit and the choreographer of the group. [35]
