SheKnows Media is an American digital media company[4] for women headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona.[1] In 2014, it acquired BlogHer and StyleCaster.
Overview
SheKnows Media publishes entertainment, fashion, health, career, parenting, and food multi-media content, with corporate advertisers like Pepsi, Kellogg's, Macy's, Harley-Davidson, Target, and Clorox.[4][5] According to comScore, in 2012 SheKnows.com became the top women's lifestyle site, surpassing iVillage.com.[5] SheKnows TV, with shows like BeYouTiful and Corner Kitchen, and Momalogues are popular SheKnows features.[5] As of December 2014[update], comScore found it to be the third most visited lifestyle media site, following Meredith Digital and AOL Lifestyle, with 78.4 unique viewers.[3][a]
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Philippe Guelton is based in Manhattan,[1] where it has one of its sales teams. The others are in Los Angeles and Chicago. More than 100 employees are located in the Scottsdale, Arizona location.[6]
History
Founded
SheKnows.com was founded in 1999 by Kyle Cox, the company's general manager; Betsy Bailey; Nancy J. Price; and another woman, all of whom worked in the publishing field.[5][2] It was designed for "21st-century mothers" with blogs, videos, and articles about entertainment, lifestyle, and parenting written by industry experts, journalists, and published authors.[who?][5]
Evolve Media
In 2006, Evolve Media Corporation purchased SheKnows. At the time, SheKnows employed five people and had 600,000 unique monthly visitors.[7] SheKnows was incorporated as a domestic limited liability company (LLC) by July 23, 2007.[8]
By November 2012, there were more than 100 employees and 41 million unique visitors each month, according to comScore. The business grew through the implementation of Evolve's proprietary publishing and marketing applications. It won Digiday Video and Publishing Awards; Online Media, Marketing and Advertising (OMMA) Awards for Website Excellence; and 2011 and 2012 Emmy Awards.[7]
Great Hill Partners
Great Hill Partners (GHP) bought in SheKnows Media Holdings from Evolve Media Corporation[6][9] on December 19, 2012.[8] GHP is a private equity and venture capital corporation[1][10] that was founded in 1999. It invests in North American growth-oriented companies, such as those within technology, service, and media-based industries.[10]
StyleCaster
On August 15, 2014,[2] SheKnows Media purchased StyleCaster Media Group based on Ninth Avenue in Manhattan to broaden its customer base, to complement its existing market, and better target young, cosmopolitan, and fashion-forward women. StyleCaster publishes DailyMakeover.com and StyleCaster.com fashion and beauty websites. Stylecaster.com has two additional sites, DailyMakeover.com and BeautyHigh.com. It is expected to realize $50 million in revenue from the combined organization, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported that the $10 million purchase was an all-stock transaction. Founders Ari Goldberg and David Goldberg were become part of the SheKnows organization. Editor-in-Chief Laurel Pinson was also to move to SheKnows from StyleCaster. A total of 100 employees were expected to occupy what has been the StyleCaster office, 30 of them coming from the SheKnows Park Avenue South office in New York City.[1]
BlogHer
BlogHer, a blogging site that monthly serves 100 million people and estimated by Ad Age to be worth between $30 and $40 million, merged with SheKnows Media[4] on November 3, 2014.[2] BlogHer co-founders Jory Des Jardins, Elisa Camahort, and Lisa Stone joined SheKnows as executives.[4] The merger, which results in a combined total of 75.3 million unique visitors, offers BlogHer customers access to SheKnows Media's multi-media resources and increased SheKnow's share of the women's presence on the internet.[4]
Greenroom Communications
Greenroom Communications, a video-production company, was signed to produce videos for SheKnows, which has produced branded content since about 2010. Greenroom's first project for SheKnows, which aired beginning in January 2015, was a video for Hidden Valley Ranch. It was produced with a Super Bowl theme as a take off of Last Friday Night by Katy Perry, who performed during the halftime show of the 2015 Super Bowl. The Holderness spot is called It's Sunday Night, which tackles how difficult it can be for parents with children to entertain. Greenroom Communications is owned by former TV news/entertainment reporters Penn and Kim Holderness, who in 2013 began making family-oriented videos...particularly Xmas Jamies, which went viral and was viewed more than 15 million times. Many of Penn and Kim's videos also feature their son Penn Charles Jr., and their daughter Lola. In 2014, Saturday Night Live did a skit based upon the Holdernesses videos.[3]
