"Sober" is a song by Romanian singer Inna, released for digital download and streaming as a single by Global Records on 6 May 2020. It was composed by Jordan Shaw, Fridolin Walcher and Joachim Walker, while the production was solely handled by Walcher under his stage name of Freedo. The song was noted as being a deep house track, following the musical path of its predecessor, "Not My Baby" (2020). Lyrically, it discusses a lonely person's wish to be in a relationship.

Music critics received "Sober" with positive reviews, praising the song's lyrics and Inna's vocal delivery. For promotional purposes, two accompanying music videos were uploaded to Inna's YouTube channel on 6 and 21 May 2020. The former was directed by Bogdan Păun and portrays Inna in black-and-white during a photoshoot at her residence. The visual was part of Global Records's Home Edition series, which presented their artists in private settings.

Background and composition

"Sober" was composed by Jordan Shaw, Fridolin Walcher and Joachim Walker, while the production was solely handled by Walcher under his stage name of Freedo.[1] Global Records released the song for digital download and streaming as a single on 6 May 2020.[2] Musically, "Sober" utilizes a "modern" dance-driven beat and follows the deep house path of its predecessor, "Not My Baby" (2020).[3][4] The track consists of verses, where pluck sounds can be heard, a "powerful" yet minimalistic refrain, and a drop which prominently utilizes a synthesizer for its lead melody alongside vocal chops.[5] Lyrically, "Sober" discusses a lonely person's wish to be in a relationship and to personally connect with someone "rather than getting with people on nights out".[4]

Critical reception

Upon release, "Sober" was received with positive reviews by music critics. While Modestas Mankus of Our Culture Mag commended the song's "solid structure" and Inna's "catchy euphonious" vocals,[3] CelebMix's Jonathan Currinn also praised the latter and the lyrical message which he tought fitted with the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic since "many people are on lockdown and are truly, completely lonely".[4] Manuel Probst of Dance-Charts highlighted the catchy and dance nature of "Sober", further stating that Inna's vocal delivery gave it a sense of authenticity.[5]

Music videos

An accompanying music video for "Sober" was uploaded to Inna's YouTube channel on 6 May 2020. It was directed by Bogdan Păun, while Alexandru Mureșan was credited as the director of photography and Loops Production as the producers.[1] Anca Buldur did the make-up, Adonis Enache the hairstyling, and RDStyling brought the outfits used.[6] The music video was part of Global Records's Home Edition series, whose scope was to present their artists in a private setting at their homes. In an interview, Inna recalled the shoot as being unconventional since it took place at her residence and only required three people.[7] In the black-and-white clip, the singer can be seen during a photoshoot; she wears casual outfits, drinks champagne and holds a microphone in her hand throughout while seemingly "bored" alone. Shots also portray Inna's bath, bed and a chair.[7] CelebMix's Currinn deemed Inna's appearance as "sexy and sassy" and similar to the one in her 2011 "Endless" visual.[4] A music video for an extended version of "Sober" was also released 21 May 2020, and was edited by Alex Chițu.[8]
