Southampton Township is a township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 655 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 29.4 square miles (76.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 655 people, 239 households, and 186 families residing in the township. The population density was 22.3 people per square mile (8.6/km²). There were 274 housing units at an average density of 9.3/sq mi (3.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.86% White, 0.92% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.15% of the population.

There were 239 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.3% were married couples living together, 4.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the township the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $29,167, and the median income for a family was $31,719. Males had a median income of $26,750 versus $21,354 for females. The per capita income for the township was $14,149. About 10.7% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.5% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
