St. Joseph's Evening College, Bangalore, became independent of St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, in 1972. It is a Jesuit college founded to empower the underprivileged sectors of Indian society. The Evening College is a minority institution and accepts students of all religious denominations without discrimination. It is affiliated to Bangalore University and offers three-year BCom, BA, BCA, and BBM degrees and two-year postgraduate degrees in Commerce (MCom), Management (MBA Twinning Programme), and English.

History

St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, was established in 1882 by the French Foreign Mission Fathers. In 1937 the management of the college was handed over to the Jesuits. In 1972, St. Joseph's Evening College became an independent evening college.[2] Some milestones in its growth:

  • 1970 – Evening division of St. Joseph's College established.
  • 1972 – Evening division separated from St. Joseph's College.
  • 1991 – Recognized under 2f, then later 12B, of the UGC Act.
  • 1996 – Permanent affiliation status with Bangalore University.
  • 2000 – The College became an independent evening UG college.
  • 2002 – Accredited by NAAC with three stars.
  • 2005 – Given autonomous status by the UGC, to devise its own curriculum.[3]
  • 2007 – St. Joseph's wins top prize at Agno-Fest competition among 13 colleges, in commerce, science, and arts competitions.[4]
  • 2009 – BBA course introduced.
  • 2010 – Reaccredited by NAAC with "B" grade with a CGPA of 2.82 out of 4.00 in the second cycle of re-accreditation.
  • 2012 – MBA twinning programme established in association with Pondicherry University.
  • 2013 – BCA course introduced.
  • 2013 – Grant of approval from MHRD and UGC for community college.
  • 2014 – Post-graduation course in commerce (MCom) introduced.[5]

The College Library has over 22,000 books.[6] The college also organizes seminars for the public; a seminar on climate change in 2011 attracted more than 400 persons.[7] Furthermore, it fields sports teams, including a successful boys' hockey team.[8]
