116th no more?
[edit]Just arrived here in August 2024, looking to update this article and maybe pick some fresh images, but I couldn't find any recent photos of their KC-135s That would be because the parent unit (141st ARW) handed over all its aircraft to the 185th ARW at Sioux City, Iowa .... way back in 2007.
Since that date it appears that '116th crew members now share aircraft with the active duty 92d Air Refueling Wing', who most fortunately are also based at Fairchild AFB.

Bloated with trivia
[edit]At the risk of treading on somebody's toes, I am going to suggest this article needs drastic pruning.
For example, the section on World War II appears at first hand to include some genuine combat action, except what I am finding is that the 116th engaged on an unspecified number of anti-submarine patrols along the west coast, e.g. coastal patrols off Oregon and Washington, and that former members of the 116th saw action whilst serving with other units. The latter is most definitely not part of the 116th story, and the anti-submarine patrols, although deemed important, were not exactly front-line action. If they had been (important), the unit would not have ended up in Oklahoma in 1943. Besides, the North American O-47 was not even an aircraft designed to engage the enemy. AFAIK the Japanese Navy only came close to the US mainland on two occasions, and there is no indication that any US unit engaged them, let alone the 116th. If I'm wrong about this, please, please set me straight.
As for the section on World War I, there are four fairly substantial paragraphs that basically boil down to
- (in France) the men were assigned to warehouse duties, storing new equipment and all manner of supplies...
- tasked in maintaining accurate inventory records and advising the Commander of shortages
- also responsible for the operation of the various mess halls, with squadron members acting as cooks, bakers and performing dish washing duties
Is this really notable?
Then we have 30 years (1945-1976) when the unit served as a Fighter Squadron, which is covered reasonably well, if a little inflated. But there is not the slightest indication of any such Fighter role in the header.
Please be aware that I will be editing this article in the near future. Quite drastically!
