Angus maximum wind

I believe the current value was reported from a ship in the channel, I don't know how that would pertain to it being the maximum gust, however there were also higher values registered in France (I think).Lacunae (talk) 18:18, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

I think the 81 mph record at Langdon Bay, Kent would be more appropriate. I think the most consistent method for wind gusts is to record land values in the UK or Ireland. That excludes anything on mountains or at sea as well as records from France and the Channel Islands.

Wikiproject support?

Wondering if there is any support in thinking about forming a wikiproject or a subproject of WikiProject Non-tropical storms to form a group to try and iron out some issues we've had, such as:

• when a separate storm page is appropriate
• coverage of European aspects of these storms
• finding a more concrete way of untangling coverage of the windstorm component and that of any contemporary flooding events.
• also to prepare for the likely transition of the Met Office/Met Eireann naming system to cover flooding.

When to add sections to the article for storms

There appears to be agreement between editors that storms should only be included on the page when they are named by the Met Offices. It would be nice if a ref and basic summary of the warning is included. Otherwise, the list of names at the top of the page in grey acts to let readers know the names to be used during the season.Lacunae (talk) 21:43, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Storm Doris - UK and Ireland?

Storm Doris today hit much of northwestern Europe. Along the Dutch coast the gusts were about 100-120 km/h, and in Germany it's already named "Sturmtief Thomas". Not sure if it warrants its own article though. Bataaf van Oranje (Prinsgezinde) (talk) 20:13, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Seasonal summary

I still find this section totally uninformative and without merit, probably a relic of involvement from editors involved in tropical cyclone articles. I propose deletion, I request input as to why this section should remain, by the nature of the events, such a section provides no insight or much information beyond a more graphical representation of "duration". Given the quantitative difference between tropical cyclones and extra tropical cyclone duration, I am unconvinced this section can serve much purpose.(repeat of last year)Lacunae (talk) 22:15, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

The section should be expanded out imo to talk about the whys of the season. For instance: Why has there only been four named storms - compare to last season? Also covered should be any background conditìons. It might also be useful to describe the system that was publically expected to become Dorris, but the UKMO decided not to name since it didnt meet the criteria in that section. From a 30 second glance im personally not a fan of the background section and would rather see some of that information merged or put elsewhere.Jason Rees (talk) 13:13, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

I agree, though it could be quite complex, firstly as a pilot project still being developed as the naming system is expanding to cover areas other than wind, not to mention a perceived more cautious approach by the Met Offices to naming than last year. So far the "season" as such is not over, so it may be premature to compare this season to the previous. It is interesting to think about the premature Doris in the press and compare it to the Norwegian extreme weather practice of only unveiling the names when the warning is issued. Also, something to look into might be something similar to that Meteo France have devised, based on Lamb 1991 http://tempetes.meteofrance.fr/Caracterisation-de-la-severite-des-tempetes.html -a sort of windstorm ACE could be a potential comparative, but then it might come up against the bounds of original research.Lacunae (talk) 21:00, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
