ARL 40

[edit]

Perhaps a general warning is appropriate here: in some sources, published in the UK or USA, it is stated that the ARL 44 was developed from the ARL 40, the latter being described as remaining a paper project only of a tank with a 75 mm gun in a turret. Alas, the sections dedicated to the subject of French tanks in general English language tank books tend to be riddled with error — and the case of the ARL 40 is no exception. The ARL 40 had little if anything to do with the ARL 44; and contrary to these sources a prototype was built and it had a 75 mm gun in the hull. The sources confuse the ARL 40 (the name is similar), the Char G1 (75 mm gun turret in the later specification) and the ARL prototype of the Char B40. The latter project really had some connection with the ARL 44, but even in this case it is slight. It is incorrect to suggest the ARL 44 had some single direct "ancestor project".--MWAK (talk) 06:02, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

One user contributed this edit, which as such is probably original research, but also interesting enough to merit a mention here:

An ARL-44 wreck has been recently discovered in the technical zone of the 2nd Dragoon Regiment at Fontevraud, France. It is relatively complete but the gun is dismounted from the turret (photo).

It could be confirmed and I'll (re)insert the information.--MWAK (talk) 12:47, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
