The article is going to need gutting if it doesn't get some references. And I question the "Start" rating for the article. It isn't top quality by any means and it doesn't reference anything. --Nogburt (talk) 08:51, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Geographical location

[edit]

The geographical coordinates in this article pointed to some empty stretch of desert and didn't show a visible, sizeable town. I corrected this on 18 May 2014. The confusion has probably arisen because Google Maps when asked to show "Abudwak" points to this empty place inside Somalia. But if you look further Google Maps does places a city called Caabuduwaaq (the Somali language version of Abudwak) on the Ethiopian side of the border, see here. Bing.com/maps also puts Abudwak/Caabudwaaq on the Ethiopian side of the border. However, there is no large town in Ethiopia in this area, close to the Somali border. So: both Google Maps and Bing Maps have drawn the border incorrectly.
ALL the populated places in Somalia are listed on this list (see the tab AdminNames) and here Abutwaq (Nr. 3980 on the list; coordinates: 6.241870, 46.225920) points to the real city while Cabudwaaq (Nr. 3996; 6.241780, 46.307200) points to empty desert in Somalia. This list is used by the United Nations for its OCHA-maps, see this map for the Cabudwaaq district. It puts Cabudwaaq (with the desert coordinates) inside Somalia and Abutwaq (where the real city is) inside Ethiopia!
Geographic.org spells the name incorrectly and talks about Abduwak. It knows two Abduwak's, both are populated places and both are in the correct area, but both point to spots of empty savanna inside Somalia, see here and here. Geographic.org also recognizes Caabudwaaq, see here but again points to empty savanna inside Somalia. To make matters worse, Geographic.org also recognizes Cabuud Waaq, see here, and again in the correct area, but again pointing to empty savanna. Finally, Geographic.org does not know a place Abudwak or Abudwaq. Inside Ethiopia, Geographic.org does not know a place Abudwak or Cabudwaaq or other spelling variants.
Geonames.org knows a place called Caabudwaaq and places it inside Somalia but again, in an empty desert spot, see here. The place where Abudwak really is located is called Bel-Ad by Geonames.org and in the corresponding satellite picture it is placed inside Ethiopia, but the corresponding text says "Somalia, Galguduud"(!), see here.
Anyway, Abudwak is inside Somalia and we should give it the proper coordinates; coordinates that point to the real city, even if Google Maps says such coordinates are in Ethiopia. A final remark: if we agree that the picture in the article is Abudwak, than (6.244849, 46.223704) really IS the correct location, because those coordinates DO point to the striped roofs and the telecom tower (please enter these coordinates in Bing.com/maps and check for yourself). Thanks for the detailed research on this. I've noticed the same thing, and suspect that the border just hasn't been defined very precisely, and that at the time that the imprecise version was established, it wasn't realized that it fell east of Abudwaq. Maybe one day this will become a territorial dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia, or maybe the actual original documents are clear enough that Abudwaq belongs in Somalia one way or another. I agree with you that the map here should show correct location of of the town regardless of whether the borders on the basemap are correct. GeoEvan (talk) 02:29, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Already had a "start" rating, but amount of info could justify "C". Importance ="mid" as town has regional importance. Folks at 137 (talk) 18:47, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
