Previous Manors

[edit]

We the pupils of the former Acklam Hall Grammar School, and Acklam High School, a 13-18 school on the site from 1968-75ish were told that there were previous manor houses on this site. Immediately prior to the Hustlers were the Boyntons, but before that was a manor owned the de Brus family of Robert the Bruce. They were lords of Cleveland in North Yorkshire, their main seat being in nearby Guisborough, and Annandale in Scotland. Sasha (talk) 01:04, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Conjecture - poorly sourced anecdote

[edit]

I have removed this story, which could have an element of truth in it, but is more likely an attempt to make links that don't exist. It tried to link the sale of the Hall to Middlesbrough Council to the business dealings of the Hustler with the Hall's inheritor. There was one reference to it - from "Then and now" - but this itself cannot be seen as a reliable source.

Although the Hustler family occupied the Hall for 300 years, in the early part of the 20th century the estate was inherited by Mostyn Hustler Hopkins from his mother Everard Hustler, second wife of William Innes Hopkins, owner of a local steelworks and construction company, Hopkins, Gilkes & Co. The Hopkins family fortune was destroyed by the association of this company with the Tay Bridge Disaster. It is therefore possible that the sale of the hall to the town of Middlesbrough was in part due to this infamous episode.[citation needed]

The reference was here. Francis Hannaway (talk) 12:41, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
