May I please be allowed to strongly object and counter Dr. Dean Chavers attempt to amend both the biography of Adam Nordwall (Fortunate Eagle) and the Alcatraz Invasion by Native Americans in 1969. As a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, I was perhaps the only non-Indian given access to the planning and development of the "invasion." It was absolutely an idea introduced by Adam Nordwall in part as an attempt to take advantage of concerns by business people on the SF mainland (developer of A line dress forgot his name) who were openly and publicly concerned about private development of the island. Richard Oaks who indeed played a vital role in the action, but only with Norwall's tutelage, would never have had the capacity as a young man to organize and direct the operation. Dean Chavers knows this as a member of the board set up by Nordwall himself and perhaps as one feeling some jealousy. It is unfortunate that such bickering continues among Native Americans on this issue. The proclamation was presented to me and other members of the SF news Media by Nordwall, and I personally in conversations with him prior to the proclamation's presentation discussed several of the ideas contained in it. The woman Chavers names as the ultimate author was an advisor and supporter of Nordwall who encouraged his action but NEVER claimed any authorship. All publications of the time and books since have backed up the fact that the proclamation came from Nordwall himself and was given to Oaks by Nordwall to read to the press as a "stall" while Nordwall sought boats to complete the invasion. For that I recommend you see Nordwall's own book "Heart of the Rock" Oklahoma Press. I would be pleased to provide more if you wish to contact me at tmfindley@yahoo.com Please at least balance a serious misstatement by Chavers. thank you Tim Findley —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.113.172.14 (talk) 00:08, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
