Year of Birth 1756 or 1757

[edit]

Some sources: [1], [2] (baptism), give his date of birth as 22 July 1756 rather than 1757.

Other sources argue for 1757: [3], [4]

The fact that the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) changed to 1756 when the original DNB had 1757 suggests there must have been good evidence. This Wikipedia article itself had "1756?" until 21 August 2009, after which it was changed to 1757, citing the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Can anyone find a source with discussion of this issue? A copy of "Sir Alexander John Ball and Malta: The beginning of an era" (1990) by Michael Galea may be instructive but is hard to find. Jaa101 (talk) 05:33, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
