Note that even though he was ethnically Italian and a citizen of the Republic of Genoa, he was a Castilian Admiral, because he was acting in the office of admiral of the Castilian fleet - not the Italian fleet of the Italian navy. Its a simple concept to understand - if you are a general in the USA army, then you're a US general, it doesn't matter where you're from. Similarly, if you're in a US uniform, sworn loyalty to defending the USA and serving in the USA army, you're a US soldier, your origins and ethnicity don't matter. Therefore, Boccanegra was a Castilian admiral and soldier even though he was an Italian person and Genoese citizen.
