The painter put Frévol de Lacoste in his painting even though the general was dead for a few days - artistic license. Frévol de Lacoste was indeed part of the Second Siege of Zaragoza and died on Feb. 2nd (wounded on Feb. 1st)

Identification[edit]

So far I don't get why this crop of an image about a battle on 8 February 1809 shows a général de brigade, who died six day before this date. Is it something about the uniform, e.g., "must be Légion d’honneur, therefore must be this" based on some not yet referenced source? –Be..anyone (talk) 07:10, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. This is the text of the 1827 Salon handbook (No. 674): "The Aragonese, refugees in this city, women, soldiers led by Palafox, defend it with heroic courage; in every house they fight from room to room and even on the roofs; gunshots still start from the top of the tower of San Engracia ruined by our artillery, which has just distroyed a part of the cloister of the church to open our way. Penetrating through this breach, the author, who had been wounded an hour before the onslaught of the Convent of St. Augustine, receives a second injury and falls at the foot of General Lacoste, and Colonel Valaze which helps to stand up. The statue is that of the Virgin Maria Mercedes praying the Lord to forgive the murderers of his son."^[1].

So there is today a problem with the date of the assault as being on Feb. 8 because, back in the time, it was clear for the painter Lejeune that the assault took place on Feb. 1st and that Lacoste was then wounded (died the day after). villy ♦✎ 20:22, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

PS: maybe I'm not clear enough. The painting was presented at the 1827 Salon, and the handbook was supposed to give the painter's explanation about his work. Hence the quote. PS:: The quote seems to be written by the author: we know that the painter Lejeune was also a military, made a baron of the First Empire and having participated himself in the Siege of Saragossa.
