Some initial notes

[edit]

I've populated the article as much as I could in the short-term. I think the ancient and medieval/Islamic periods are more or less sufficiently covered for an overview article, as the rest can be found in linked articles. I wasn't totally sure how to name and organize some of the headings though, as there's many degrees of overlap between periods, depending on how you define them. E.g.: the Ancient Egyptian architecture article doesn't cover much on the Greco-Roman period, though it probably should as the more developed Egyptian temple article does; while the architecture section of the Roman Egypt article, which is pretty good, overlaps with the less developed Coptic architecture article. Other e.g.: politically speaking, Egypt remained nominally under Ottoman suzerainty until 1914 I believe, but under actual British control after 1881, and architecturally speaking it seems Western architecture came to supplant more "Islamic" styles starting in the 1860s (when the Khedivate also became officially recognized by Istanbul), but soon followed by some reactions to this like neo-Mamluk and neo-Pharaonic. Basically, I've tried to organize things according to more stylistic criteria that also line up with available main articles, hopefully making it easier for interested readers to know which articles they can go to for more information. In my opinion that's also why the period starting with Khedive Ismail's rule and up until now is the area of the article that needs the most expansion, because unlike the other periods there are no other dedicated articles for this. It would also be nice to have more about the rest of Egypt beyond Cairo, though Cairo inevitably looms large. R Prazeres (talk) 02:08, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lead sentence

[edit]

I'm looking again at the article's lead and comparing to some similar articles (e.g. Architecture of the United Kingdom, Architecture of Germany, Architecture of the United States, Chinese architecture, etc) and I think it still needs a short introductory sentence to clarify the article's scope. As is, the first sentence and paragraph is just about Ancient Egypt, so readers visiting the article for the first time or looking at the page preview (where only the first sentences and first image are shown) may be initially confused at the difference between this article and Ancient Egyptian architecture.

I know that Duckmather quite reasonably removed the original lead sentence for being redundant ([1]), but I wonder if there would be objections to adding a new sentence that more clearly establishes scope? Maybe something along the lines of (very rough example): "The history of architecture in Egypt begins with the monuments of ancient Egypt, includes later Coptic and Islamic architecture, and extends up to modern constructions of the present day." Thanks for any thoughts, R Prazeres (talk) 23:29, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@R Prazeres: I have boldly added a different lead sentence that I think summarizes the article much better. Duckmather (talk) 23:05, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thank you! R Prazeres (talk) 00:25, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
