Elevation

[edit]

Note that GNIS for Badwater Basin states that the elevation is -279 ft., whereas USGS page says -282. I removed the previous reference that referred to the National Elevation Dataset (NED), because the NED was retired, see [1] and the link was no longer valid (archive.org was no help). The photo in the article says -282. See [2] for a description of how the elevation of the sign is not actually -282. I did a bit of WP:OR with the 3DEP viewer at [3] but I was only able to find locations that were -280 ft. Cxbrx (talk) 04:56, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I see that there are several wiki pages that use the -279 value. I'm fairly convinced that -282 is correct. If I do a Google search for ' site:usgs.gov badwater "279 feet" ', I get "about 3 results". Searching for ' site:usgs.gov badwater "282 feet" ' gets "about 46 results". However, rather than updating the other pages, I'll wait a bit and see if there is disagreement. Cxbrx (talk) 05:11, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Cxbrx: The 1986 1:24000 topo map shows a number of elevation measurements taken across the basin with -282 feet being the lowest one. I believe that is correct. I would speculate that the -279 elevation refers to the elevation immediately next to the tourist viewpoint on the east side of the basin. According to the topo map, the center of the basin is 3 feet lower. I believe the series of edits you have made are correct. — hike395 (talk) 08:53, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Relevance to Mars

[edit]

The lowest point on Mars' surface is known as Badwater [4][5]. Perhaps the relation could be added to this article? Sink Cat (talk) 01:32, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have added that information. Cintilo (talk) 02:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
