Fair use rationale for Image:Bags&trane.jpg

[edit]

Image:Bags&trane.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

How to date

[edit]

The proper date for this album should be 1961, not 1959.

If we make a distinction between when an album was released and when it was recorded, we may be able to untangle the mess of the chronology of Coltrane's albums.

According to [1] John Coltrane Discography, the Atlantic releases were as follows:

Giant Steps (Atlantic LP 1311, SD 1311)

(NYC, April 1, 1959 rejected alt takes)
(NYC, May 4, 1959; NYC, May 5, 1959; NYC, December 2, 1959)

Coltrane Jazz (Atlantic LP 1354, SD 1354)

(NYC, November 24, 1959; NYC, December 2, 1959; NYC, October 21, 1960)

My Favorite Things (Atlantic LP 1361, SD 1361)

(NYC, October 21, 1960; NYC, afternoon, October 24, 1960; NYC, October 26, 1960)

Milt Jackson/John Coltrane - Bags And Trane (Atlantic LP 1368, SD 1368)

(NYC, January 15, 1959)

Ole Coltrane (Atlantic LP 1373, SD 1373)

(A&R Studios, NYC, May 25, 1961)

Coltrane Plays The Blues (Atlantic LP 1382, SD 1382)

(NYC, afternoon, October 24, 1960; NYC, evening, October 24, 1960)

Coltrane's Sound (Atlantic LP 1419, SD 1419)

(NYC, afternoon, October 24, 1960; NYC, evening, October 24, 1960; NYC, October 26, 1960)

John Coltrane/Don Cherry - The Avant-Garde (Atlantic LP 1451, SD 1451)

(NYC, June 28, 1960; NYC, July 8, 1960)

The Coltrane Legacy (Atlantic SD 1553)

(NYC, January 15, 1959; NYC, afternoon, October 24, 1960; NYC, October 26, 1960; A&R Studios, NYC, May 25, 1961)

The numbers following 'Atlantic LP' demonstrate the order of release. The location and dates in parentheses are the recording sessions for the albums. Notice 'Bags and Trane' was released right after the 'My Favorite Things' album, even though the recording sessions predate the sessions for 'Giant Steps'. Also note that the song 'Village Blues' and 'My Favorite Things' were part of the same session featuring the new line-up with bassist Steve Davis, but were split between 'My Favorite Things' and 'Coltrane Jazz':

John Coltrane Quartet John Coltrane (ss, ts) McCoy Tyner (p) Steve Davis (b) Elvin Jones (d) NYC, October 21, 1960 5118 Village Blues Atlantic LP 1354 - Village Blues (alt. take) Rhino R2 71984 5119 Equinox Atlantic rejected 5120 My Favorite Things Atlantic LP 1361, SD 1528, SD 1541, SD 2-313 5121 The Night Has A Thousand Eyes Atlantic rejected 5400 My Favorite Things, Pt. 1 Atlantic 5012 5401 My Favorite Things, Pt. 2 -

  • John Coltrane - Coltrane Jazz (Atlantic LP 1354, SD 1354)
  • John Coltrane - My Favorite Things (Atlantic LP 1361, SD 1361)

The only way to make sense of it all is to list all albums by release date, not recording date. That would make this a 1961 album instead of a 1959 one.
