Merger proposal

I basically agree as long as there will be a redirect to Bahun, which is common practice anyway I suppose. The term Brahmin-Hill is seldom used and not as well known as Bahun. I suggest let's wait for a week or so -- if there are no more comments or meaningful arguments in this period against a merger, then just go ahead. I agree with waiting to see if anyone else wants to comment. Perhaps Brahman-Hill is more descriptive though. We *could* redirect Bahun to Brahman-Hill. So how does this term translate? Do people actually say पहाडी ब्राह्मण् (Pahari Brahman) or is it (almost) always Bahun? What do academics and the better newspapers do?

An incidental question about the list of Brahman names. Are all of them found in Nepal? LADave (talk) 23:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

True, but we are writing about hill Bahuns here. A name not established in the hill districts should not be in this list. But no problem if it is found in the hills *and* the Tarai, or hills *and* India. LADave (talk) 08:08, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Bahun is the term used in every-day Nepali language, not Brahman-Hill, which is only a translation of the Nepali word पहाडी ब्राह्मण् for Bahuns coming from the mid-hills; therefore, the redirect should be from Brahman-Hill to the Bahun article ! BhagyaMani (talk) 09:14, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I tried searching Nepali Wikipedia [1] There were hundreds of articles containing "बाहुन". Only five articles contained पहाडी *and* ब्राह्मण. None of these actually had "पहाडी ब्राह्मण" together as a phrase. This may not be "pakka" proof but it certainly supports what you are saying above. So that's what I'll do -- merge into Bahun. Apparently, two different people started these articles without checking the available infos. I agree to bring some meaningful structure into this "huddle-muddle".

Title of article and merging

The title "Brahman-Hill" is obviously incorrect and should be "Brahmin-Hill". Because:

• for the meaning of Brahman see this and also this article
• in the scientific literature about this ethnic group, it is referred to as "Brahmin-Hill" or "Brahmin (Hill)", but not called "Brahman-Hill".

Re: proposal to merge with Bahun article: both are so badly referenced that merging them does not improve any of the two. Therefore, I suggest to improve this one by using reliable scientific sources. These are scarce but they exist. BhagyaMani (talk) 10:08, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
