If you merge Gatchaman and Battle of The Planets, then you should merge Power Rangers and all the other Super Sentai. The changes between the original series and the North American one are more than enough to take them as different and independent beings.

I'd really like it if we could keep information correctly sorted between this and the Gatchaman article, so that this article contains only the information relevant to Battle of the Planets, not everything relevant to Gatchaman. -- Antaeus Feldspar 18:24, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I totally agree. Additionally Battle of The Planets is known to the entire X Generation of American kids like myself as Battle of The Planets. I can see anime purists wanting to merge the two but I'd never even heard of Gatchaman till reading this. Battle of the Planets deserves its own entry. --207.172.210.36 01:55, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

One more vote for a separate entry of BOTP. Growing up in the 80'ws BOTP was the cartoon to watch. A link back to the original series is warranted, but BOTP had a lot of creative change.

--- Honestly, I'm anti-merge for several reasons. First, I think merging BOTP into Gatchaman will confuse a lot of searchers of Wiki. Many Xers only know the show as BOTP, and are not interested in Gatchaman. Second, Gatchaman is a show for adults, and BOTP for children. The animation is primarily the same (though Sandy Frank cut and pasted and drew some stuff [Zark, the "ready room" to pull their version together), but the storylines are not. Though the BOTP eps often are based on the original Gatch storyline, they are typically so different that it's a whole different story. And not only is the storyline different -- so are the characters. Jason is a far cry from Joe, Ken never had anything going on with Jun (Mark and Princess), and the original Gatch team was very adult -- older than their years. The BOTP characters are still kids, and the messages embedded in the episodes are for kids. Finally, BOTP stripped out the most pivotal episodes in the Gatch series -- Ken and Red Impulse, Joe dying of brain damage, Katse as a hermaphrodite, Ken and Joe as friends and near-equals rather than a resentful second and an arrogant leader. The things that make Gatchaman what it is are not present in BOTP -- but then, the things that make BOTP what it is are not present in Gatchaman -- the campy humor, the ridiculous robot, the simplistic relationships among characters, the messages intended to teach children to behave (though I really think Eagle Riders wins the prize on that one). I do think G-Force and Eagle Riders should also fall into the BOTP category (in spite of the fact that G-Force in particular was much closer to the original storylines) because they are all Americanized shows based on (but not usually translated from) the original Japanese. On the other hand, I think the OAVs and the recent ADV translations should fall into the Gatch category. Katsesama 06:15, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

No campy humor in Gatch? Come now. For instance in an early episode, Galactor have some weapon called "Compact" and Jinpei goes off on some joke about ladies' makeup. This is because コンパクト ("konpakuto") is also the word for a women's clam-shell make-up kit. Plenty of cheese from that character throughout the series.24.85.131.247 (talk) 03:32, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

I agree that they should be kept separate; I don't know the first thing about either of these topics, but I would have been confused, and less edified, if I had to wade through a single combined article of the two. The American series was popular enough, apparently, to get its own article separate from the original, IMO. nae'blis (talk) 21:14, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

On the disputed merge proposal

Please see Wikipedia:Merging#B. --

  • The section on BOTP had been removed from the above page. Judging by recent article edits, and the fact that there seemed to be no consensus on the discussion, this still seems to be disputed so I have re-added it. Cheers TigerShark 07:27, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Are you kidding me? BOTP stands on its own

Why would you merge them together?! That would be like merging Super Sentai with Power Rangers even though both series are VERY different from one another. Just because two series use the same footage does not mean they are the same thing. If the story and plot is drastically different, they arent the same bloody thing.

-Battle of the Planets deserves its own entry. However, it should have a link to the Gatchaman entry, as they are related. They are related, but not enough to merge them.

Alan Dinehart as a vocal talent?

Alan Dinehart died on July 17, 1944. I'm fairly certain he didn't participate in BotP. Capedude2005 (talk) 07:46, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

^^^ Reply to above ^^^ uh, yes ...THAT Alan Dinehart died in 1944. His son Alan Jr. (1918-1992) and grandson Alan III (1936-) were very much alive when they BOTH worked on BotP in '78 (by which time Alan Jr. was calling himself just "Alan Dinehart," while Alan III had begun calling himself "Alan Dinehart Jr."). Sadly, it's unlikely there will be a next Alan Dinehart unless Alan III "pulls a Tony Randall" and fathers another child before he passes on (he didn't name any of his already-born sons Mason Alan, which is the actual full name of all three Alan Dineharts) Shotguntony (talk) 03:17, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

As far as "G-Force: Guardians of Space" goes, I'm in the process of completely revamping it's wikipedia article, and IMO considering one of the goals behind the creation of the G-Force dub was to distance itself from "Battle of the Planets" as much as possible (which as we all know, failed miserably, hence why so many people CONFUSE ONE WITH THE OTHER AND END UP TRASHING G-FORCE once they figure it all out!), I think it should remain a separate article. But hey, both of the adaptations are owned by Sandy Frank Entertainment!!!.........if that's of any consolation. Later!!! NAMU!!! 06:43, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Kage-Maru87

Show Times?

TV show times is cool, but time zones aren't mentioned (EST? GMT? PST?) and appear to be exclusive to US television. It would also be nice to include citations of resources. Katsesama 10:50, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I think it would be nice if they included if possible other countries the show was broadcast i know in the 1980s it was broadcast in the UK on the BBC [1] Dwanyewest (talk) 21:33, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Episodes List

Added episode listing including related Gatchaman episode number. A chart format seemed like the most space-friendly way to do things, but you'll notice the episodes are listed horizontally rather than vertically, which has a lot to do with laziness; adding all the little wiki markers to make the chart was enough work for me for tonight. If someone wants to reorganize so #2 is UNDER #1 rather than to it's right, please feel free.

I chose the chart format I did because I liked the way it looked better than some of the charts that have thick borders on a plain white background. That's just Aesthetics According to Carolyn, so if someone has an idea to make it look prettier, I'm a-ok with that.

Race Bannon redirect

I removed the Race Bannon redirect because it makes no sense. Race Bannon is apparently a reference to Johnny Quest, which has nothing to do with BotP (other than perhaps that it was aired around the same time). I know it wasn't a Tatsunoko production, I think off the top of my head that it was Hanna Barbera?

The formal Race Bannon inquiry does in fact redirect correctly to Johnny Quest; I'm thinking this redirect was in error?

Katsesama 09:49, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

What's this about Sandy Frank Entertainment's contract with Tatsunoko expiring???

At least that's what the comment on the BotP article alluded to. Is this true, and if so could whoever wrote that (or anyone for that matter) provide a source??? I'd like to hear more about it, because if the rights to market "Battle of the Planets" have expired, then so have the rights for "G-Force: Guardians of Space" as Sandy Frank owns both adaptations. This worries me very much, especially in the case of the latter adaptation. NAMU!!! 06:48, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Kage-Maru87

Request for an "Episode List" variations table.......anyone?

Hello there, I just finished completely overhauling what previously was a stub of a page for G-Force: Guardians of Space and (if you guys didn't mind) utilized your variation tables on my article. Considering I'm still a wiki noob, would anyone be willing or help me whip up a table for Episode List comparisons between Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets/G-Force??? The list is already available: [2]. This would make it much easier for people who are looking to pinpoint a specific episode or would like to see the differences in naming inbetween the three. The table can be utilized on all 3 Gatchaman/BotP/G-Force articles. How about it??? Die 7-Zark-7 Die!!! 12:47, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Kage-Maru87

2009 Disney Film Mention?

May 1st, 2009 I'm seeing on Dark Horizons http://www.darkhorizons.com/rel-us09.php a reference to G-Force

Johngagon (talk) 23:53, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Guntron Alliance Force

The reference to the Perry Bible Fellowship comic parody "Guntron Alliance Force" has got to be a parody of Voltron, not BOtP. Personally I always felt Voltron was a rip-off of BOtP, so its not surprising that this confusion would be made. But seriously, that looks trademark Voltron, not BOtP.

Qed (talk) 00:33, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Archetype for Voltron and Power Ranger types

Is Battle of the planets the first of the power squads like in voltron or power rangers. They usually have the fat guy, the shrimpy guy, the girl, the hero, the jerk. But I can't remember the show well enough to be sure this is the case.98.250.99.163 (talk) 18:09, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Additions

I have made some addition Gatchaman pages to distinguish them from one one another I feel a template needs to be made also. Dwanyewest (talk) 01:37, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Eagle Riders should be moved to this page Eagle Riders (1996 TV series) Dwanyewest (talk) 02:17, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I have added a template and it needed doing I hope it is satisfactory and no one has a problem with it.

Dwanyewest (talk) 22:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Contradiction

"The adaptation is generally faithful to the plot and character development of the original Gatchaman series" (intro) and "It should be noted that, in spite of the alterations, the plot and character development of the adaptation generally follows that of the original to a higher degree than it is usually given credit for." vs. "The Battle of the Planets adaptation differs significantly from Gatchaman."

Which is it? Smacks of two editors with different opinions trying to put them across or (at best) trying to achieve pseudo-neutrality by putting two contradicting POVs in!

Ubcule (talk) 19:13, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

I concur. The sentiment that BotP is a "faithful" adaptation sounds a bit like apologism to me, especially considering BotP is probably the most extensively edited anime for an American distribution, or at least the most well known example of such, along with Voltron. It gives the false idea that despite the edits, BotP isn't much different from Gatchaman when it in fact is.Takeshi357 (talk) 14:50, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
