Imprecise deductions
[edit]The following sentence in Bellechasse (electoral district) is ambiguous:
- In 1924, Bellechasse was re-defined to consist of the County of Bellechasse, except for the seigneuries of Lauzon and Joliette in the municipality of Honfleur, and the townships of Langevin and Ware in the municipality of Sainte-Sabine.
because the scope of "except for" could end at the comma, or the end of the sentence.
If that scope ends at the comma, the sent is equivalent to
- In 1924, [the district of] Bellechasse was re-defined to consist of the following:
- the County of Bellechasse, except for the seigneuries of Lauzon and Joliette in the municipality of Honfleur
- the townships of Langevin and Ware in the municipality of Sainte-Sabine
and the townships are implied to be outside the county.
If that scope ends at the end of the sentence, the sent is equivalent to
- In 1924, [the district of] Bellechasse was re-defined to consist of the County of Bellechasse, except the following:
- the seigneuries of Lauzon and Joliette in the municipality of Honfleur
- the townships of Langevin and Ware in the municipality of Sainte-Sabine
and the townships are implied to be inside the county. The accompanying article stub Bellechasse County thus says nothing about whether they were part of the county.
