Anyone interested in this subject, I think the article needs more technical info on particular model numbers. I ended up here because I have an engine model number to identify, and the Briggs website is frankly unhelpful at letting me guesss what the illegible model number actually reads. Did I miss something? I'm looking for help with some problems. Not history or some company blowing it's own horn. How about some trouble shooting, or Q&A? Or would that be dry reading? Robert Riddiford

I as an employee of Briggs and Stratton do agree with your posts. This page doesn't help with any problems and it is missing new engines that have came out in the past few years. As for the Briggs and Stratton web site, completely useless. Sandpiper, if you read this, the best thing to do is take it to a local dealer, Lowes, Home Depot, and see if they can help you Identify what engine you have. There are usually two places to find the model number at on one of our engines. First being the bar code label on the back side of the engine, the flat ribbed side, depending on the model. The second being on the side of the engine where the sparkplug is, unfortunately also depending on the model. Nuetrality of this article

From what I can see only promotional material and material from B&S has been used to create this article. No other view points are given or acknowledged to exist. Who says "Their engines are known for their durability and low maintenance requirements" and why is this being presented as truth? Readers are meant to be able to check the veracity and origin of materila presented in Wikipedia. And alternative POV shown. But this article doesnt have a single cite in its text. Maybe its full of good info or maybe its all rubbish - unless you show where the info comes from no-one else can tell. Please clean this article up, ask for help if you need it. I feel I must agree. While I have used their engines for years & agree with the opinions, anecdotal evidence is generally unhelpful & original research is not allowed in Wikipedia, especially research that has not been peer-reviewed. Furthering this, why is a link to 'Briggs & Stratton Decals at Classic-Engines.com' & a website 'To identify a B&S engine go to' in the Reference section? If I find time this summer I will try to come up with some scholarly or at least less biased sources. I encourage others to as well. I remind others reading this talk page that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and isn't really meant to provide a discussion board for troubleshooting and the like. Your questions are certainly legitimate, but are outside the purpose of Wikipedia. However, links to sites devoted to exactly the information you seek are most certainly welcome in the 'External links' section of the article.Snideology (talk) 17:03, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability of engines

All I can say is I've had 2 engines that have been defective and replaced by B&S at their cost. Both times it was due to material failures, I've searched and haven't been able to find one recall due to material failure....the second time I wasn't even able to learn what it was that failed on my brand new power washer. I'd like to suggest cleaning up this page by separating the history of the company from the technical discussion of the products. Basically, all information on the products is available elsewhere and information on model numbers is outdated and incomplete, and always will be. This type of information is not appropriate in an encylopedia anyway, and as stated previously, is available elsewhere. If product information is deemed desireable, perhaps another page (B&S Products?) would be appropriate? I'm willing to enhance the history of the company but the page has so much incorrect information about products that rectifying that aspect seems a very daunting task! Easy-Spin Starting

This article makes it sound like the compression release was completely discontinued after 1997, but that's not the case. I don't know when it started, but most Briggs I've worked on have had an extra cam "bump" attached to a counterweight. This makes it so when starting the engine, compression is released, but once the engine is running, the counterweight gets rid of the "bump".
