I lived in the area for half of the sixties and all of the seventies, and the first word of Burgh Heath was always pronounced as two syllables, with an 'r' sound in the middle (as in Edinburgh). It seems somewhat POV to label this a mispronunciation. We Surreyers are hardly noted for our rhoticity elsewhere. It is only in recent years that I have heard the single-syllable pronunciation (with 'r' dropped). Where is the evidence that Burgh Heath was "historically" pronounced burr heath? How is burr heath supposed to be pronounced, anyway? Some IPA would be nice. Anyone? Grant (talk) 13:30, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

I changed the lead accordingly, because my parents also often pronounced Burgh as two syllables; they arrived in Nork in the 1930s. Both pronounciations sound natural to me (I grew up there in the 1960s and 70s). Furthermore, I found a reference confirming the two syllable pronounciation of Burgh amongst older residents. However, the Burgh in "Great Burgh" was always pronounced as a single syllable in my experience. Jmchutchinson (talk) 12:16, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
