Formula 1 Car death[edit]

"It has been claimed here that Cameron Earl was the first driver to die in a Formula 1 accident. This claim is utterly untrue ... sadly there were several previous victims: Achille Varzi and Christian Kautz (both 1948), St John Horsfall (1949). The claim appears to have been based on the incorrect assumption that 'Formula 1' began in 1950 coincident with the introduction of the FIA Formula 1 Drivers World Championship race series. In fact Formula 1 pre-dated the World Championship, having been formalised in 1948."
