The mention of petal fusion in the discussion of subfamilies is in error. No members of Caryophyllaceae have connate petals. Sepals are probably what is meant here, but even so the wording is confusing; all members of Caryophyllaceae (so far as I am aware) have sepals that are at least basally connate; important variation in sepal fusion is in the degree of fusion (e.g., the calyx forms a tube in Silene), not its presence or absence.
