The term catfish

[edit]

The first line of the plot section reads A "catfish" is a person who creates fake profiles online and pretends to be someone they are not by using someone else's pictures and information.

Is this a pre-existing term, or did the creators of this show/film come up with the term? 98.221.141.21 (talk) 06:30, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In the documentary Catfish, the husband of Angela (the catfish), explains that they used to tank cod but theyd get mushy before theyd make it to dock so they put catfish in there to keep them fresh and agile, that's where the creators took the term 'catfish' from, it's even on the page in a quote box. Lady Lotus (talk) 15:21, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You added that quote box AFTER I asked the question, don't play dumb. And it looks rather clunky and poorly placed.
Anyway, the concept of catfishing isn't new, but I guess this film coined a phrase for the process. That's all the article needs to say, not some clunky quote in the middle of the opening text. 98.221.141.21 (talk) 13:16, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not playing dumb, I added that box a couple months ago and didn't realize it had been taken off, so when I said that there's a quote box and went to the page and saw that it wasn't there, I replaced it. No need to be rude. Lady Lotus (talk) 22:27, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't trying to be rude. When you told me there was a quote box, even though there wasn't, and then you added it (or re-added it) I thought that was rude. You assumed the quote was there, even though it wasn't. Then when you saw it was missing, you readded it without clarifying here. You should have added an explanation that you were readding it. Regardless, I can see why it was removed. 98.221.141.21 (talk) 11:44, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering how much different this is from Sockpuppet (Internet). Should the above quote link to the sockpuppet article? 73.185.71.43 (talk) 05:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Met"

[edit]

The list of episodes keeps using the word met in a contradictory way, i.e. "they met but they never met." It's ridiculous, please reword. Richard75 (talk) 21:05, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Authenticity?

[edit]

The makers claim that Catfish is authentic, and this article seems uncritical. However, the first episode of the first series, "Sunny", appears staged.

In an interview with the makers, Sunny says of her online love, RJ, that: 1. his sisters died in a car crash, 2. he works for a modelling agency, 3. he writes and makes cue cards for a TV show, and 4, he is a online student of anaesthiology.

The film makers' research shows that the real RJ's sisters are alive, and that he does not work for the TV show, in any capacity. They phone "him", on the number Sunny has, and find he sounds like a child. However in the show they are not shown as having contacted the modelling agency which Sunny said RJ worked for, and which, in Sunny's words, was RJ's real job. They then take Sunny to meet RJ and en route tell her what they have discovered.

If they'd checked RJ's primary reference, the modelling agency, they would have found that the real RJ did exist, that he did work through them, and that he had never heard of nor spoken to either Sunny or her sister. Of course if they had done so there would have been no programme. They did contact him at "the end" of the programme...

If calling RJ's place of work was not the first point of inquiry in ivestigating the truth of the RJ story then it was a major line of inquiry. If the producers did in fact make the call then why didn't they tell Sunny about it and before taking her to confront the Catfish? If they did not make the call before taking Sunny to meet the Catfish then why didn't they?

We are to believe that nobody, nobody, was curious about RJ's modelling career "at the time", and that the producers only made these calls "afterwards". And that the programme is authentic.

Catfish TV show seems more authentic than any other TV show. The basic truth, of two people having never met, and finding out who they are, is not undermined by the editing or production details in the making of the show. Mhissy is an exception since she knew her online partner only too well, in real life. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.104.113.175 (talk) 17:48, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The "Untold Stories"

[edit]

When did that air? I don't see it on here. I know it's from Season 4, but not sure when the air date was. If someone can add it, that would be great. 208.96.104.72 (talk) 11:43, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
