Primary topic?
[edit]There seems to have been a bit of a slow-moving edit war on this. Perhaps it would be constructive to discuss it here, rather than just flat statements in edit summaries. The essays WP:PT or User:Jwy/Primary Topics: Why and Which could be sensible places to start. I just spent some little time altering about 80 links to Churchill. For the great majority I simply substituted Winston Churchill, but there were several cases where it needed to be one of the Churchill placenames. There remain about 9 inward links to Churchill from article space, which are cases where I felt unable or disinclined to interfere. It would be encouraging if editors with strong feelings on this topic could do something to sort them out. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 21:15, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- If you'd like the disambiguation page to be the base name (i.e., change the current primary topic to no primary topic), probably a requested move of Churchill (disambiguation) will be the best approach. (And the dn tag can be used when you can't figure out which way to dab.) -- JHunterJ (talk) 21:32, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- I addressed a few of the others. The ones that remain appear to be correctly linking to Churchill as a redirect to Winston, and as long as it is a redirect, they don't need to be fixed. Rather than simply substituting Winston Churchill, minor edits should have probably substituted Churchill, depending on the context. -- JHunterJ (talk) 21:46, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- My statement above "I simply substituted Winston Churchill" was inaccurate, because over-simplified. In fact I did generally substitute Churchill.
- I've re-edited the Churchill references in Broadclyst and A13 motorway (Switzerland) in a way which seems more helpful. The latter is an appalling example of what happens when someone uses automatic translation from the German without understanding it.
- I've made the move request.

I made the move request in response to JHunterJ's suggestion above, thinking he was trying to be helpful. The only consequence was to allow him a more formal place to express his disagreement, and the added comments of a couple of editors, neither of whom has ever edited the relevant pages. What a waste of time. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 13:40, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- It was helpful. I disagreed with the change in the primary topic. Going through the Wikipedia process for determining such a change enabled both of us to find out which of our individual views had consensus. I do not understand why you think that either following Wikipedia processes or soliciting additional input (even from editors who have previously been uninvolved) is a waste of time. -- JHunterJ (talk) 17:01, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
