1840 or 1841?[edit]

An article in Fraser's Magazine (November 1852) on Harriet Beecher Stowe reports she was profoundly affected by a violent race riot which took place in Cincinnati in '1840'. Is this just a misprint for 1841, or were there two riots in consecutive years? The article describes the whites as using a cannon on this occasion too.RLamb (talk) 20:24, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There were also Cincinnati Riots of 1836, and Harriet Beecher Stowe commented on them [1]. Quite possibly there were other riots in 1840, but I suspect that Fraser's Magazine got the year wrong. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:33, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was thinking of adding a quote from this article [2] as background to the 1841 riot, but I'm not sure about it. It was first published in a British magazine eleven years after the events; it description of the riot diverges from the sourced account; the author doesn't identify himself beyond 'An Alabama Man'; and he's not claiming ever to have been in Cincinnati himself. He does write as if he knows some of the Stowes personally, but even if Mrs Stowe was his source she wasn't a direct eyewitness of the violence: he only claims she was there, at a distance, and helped and spoke with survivors. He claims this particular riot had a critical impact on her, but if her surviving papers never even mention it, only the '36 riot - well, it makes you wonder whether 'An Alabama Man' got more than the year wrong? The Fraser's source says "The terrible and dramatic scenes which occurred in Cincinnati between 1835 and 1847 ... The abolition press established there in 1835 ...". This source, which is contemporary, says the press was established in January 1836. There do seem to have been repeated riots, but I think the Fraser's source is talking about the 1841 riots.
