Martinevans123 - Good to hear from you, Martin. Hope you're keeping safe and well. What I'm failing to distinguish between here is the collection of articles published in 1954 (my copy is the 1958 reprint) called Monmouthshire Sketch Book, and the entire series published in the Argus which, somewhat confusingly, was also called Monmouthshire sketchbook. The cross doesn't appear in the former, as you say, but it does appear in the latter. I've actually got a photocopy of the article in front of me now (Newport Library copied it for me) but unfortunately it doesn't have the date of publication on it, or the newspaper page number, although the illustration of the cross is signed "Fred Hando 1961". Sometime, I'll have to do the research to find out what South Wales Argus number it was actually printed in. The Collins/Mitchell is another confusion of my making. I have the Collins book, in which Mitchell's article is reprinted, but only discovered the online version of the Mitchell recently. We could now drop the Collins and cite both 8 and 9 to Mitchell. Cheers, KJP. Thanks so much for such a fulsome reply to my somewhat cryptic note. Hope you are also safe and well. I have the 1973 reprint of Monmouthshire Sketch Book. I also can't find any mention in Barber's two volumes of Hando's Gwent (Vol I has only Raglan Castle). I guess The Argus would retain the copyright of his illustration? Elizabeth Harcourt Mitchell[edit]

p.s. Elizabeth Harcourt Mitchell dedicates her 1893 book to her father John Etherington Welch Rolls of The Hendre. She is mentioned in that article but (rather unfairly, I think) only the son John gets to appear on the family tree. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:53, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Those Victorians and their primogeniture! Yes, I did notice that. Many moons ago, when I was wondering if The Hendre could make an FA, I came across an editor who was one of the Harding-Rolls family. He had some terrific photos etc, and did a lot on the family tree, but I don’t think he’s around anymore. Lizzie also wrote masses of historical bodice-rippers!
