Having just returned from Curry Village, I can attest that the image labelled "View from Curry village" is not correct. The view in the image is from several miles further west in the valley. --Dcfleck 11:48, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

which images?

[edit]

I think that the picture of Half Dome from Glacier Point (not Curry Village), and the picture of Yosemite Falls from its base (not Curry Village) do not obey the Manual of Style for relevant images, which states:

Pertinence and encyclopedicity Images must be relevant to the article they appear in and be of sufficient notability (relative to the article's topic)

These pictures are relevant to Yosemite Valley, not Curry Village. Now, if someone had pictures of the view from near Curry Village, that would be relevant. See, e.g., Commons:Mount Dana. I would propose re-deleting these pictures, although we can certainly discuss the relevancy of the images. I would also like to hear what other editors think. hike395 03:23, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

May 2007 and no responses? Okay, here's mine. I agree. Yosemite Falls is not in the neighborhood of Curry Village (I've visited both places twice this year). The article says Yosemite Falls is a short walk from C. Village, but it's a long walk by the average person's standards. A more practical way to go from one to the other is to take the free shuttle bus. A photo of Mirror Lake would be more suitable; although Mirror Lake isn't visible from C. Village, it can be reached by a moderate walk. Cognita (talk) 05:14, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done --- thanks for reminding me. I did a bunch of cleanup in addition to removing the image. —hike395 (talk) 06:08, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great! But the article still says Yosemite Falls is a short walk away. What's a short walk away is Stoneman Meadow, with a view of Yos. Falls but not the falls themselves.
Should the image be replaced with something more relevant? I have a photo of Staircase Falls, taken from C. Village, April 2011 (it was flowing), but I don't know how to upload it. Cognita (talk) 06:21, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good points. I removed the offending sentences: Tourist info doesn't belong in Wikipedia, anyway. I put a placeholder pic of Staircase Falls into the article: you're more than welcome to replace it with a better pic. People generally upload images to Wikimedia Commons, which is a shared repository for Wikipedia across all languages. The upload page is here: it will guide you through a step-by-step process. Hopefully when you registered, you got an account on all the wikis -- if it does not let you upload, come back to my Talk page, and we'll see if we can fix it. Looking forward to your image! —hike395 (talk) 16:16, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My photo is not so good technically as the placeholder one. Taken with a pocket camera, and the direction of the morning light made deep shadowy areas on trees. Its advantage is the viewpoint, which was the central area between C. Village's front office and the dining hall (and that it doesn't already appear in the Staircase Falls article). Would you mind looking at it so that a decision can be made at this stage? This is the version at Photobucket: http://s641.photobucket.com/albums/uu134/OhLook/?action=view&current=11-1.jpg
I don't mind the shadowy trees so much, but the size of the falls seem much smaller than the placeholder pic. Could you crop it to just show the falls? —hike395 (talk)
I can crop it until resolution becomes an issue; even with sharpening, it'll look fuzzy unless reduced from larger than final size. The area around the falls is an impressive rock face anyway and is visible at all seasons, unlike the falls. This will take a while. I had to open a Wikimedia account, and I have yet to learn some rules and procedures there. Having trouble finding the right category. Cognita (talk) 04:52, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you want commons:category:Waterfalls in Yosemite National Park. Hopefully, it won't be too fuzzy! —hike395 (talk) 06:45, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Information about what features are near C. Village seems appropriate to me. It's much less touristy than the Paris examples at the NOTGUIDE page. Only, it should be accurate! Cognita (talk) 17:40, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you'd like to put in some nearby points of interest, that would be OK with me. —hike395 (talk) 00:40, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, nothing as famous as Yosemite Falls is right near there, and everyone in the Valley has or can easily get a map anyway. Cognita (talk) 06:43, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to upload a cropped and color-corrected photo. UploadWizard wouldn't take it. I got this message: "'Unknown error: 'unknown-warning'" on each try. The filename has no spaces. What's next? Cognita (talk) 17:09, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I managed to get the photo onto the Commons by using the old, less buggy uploader. It's here:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StaircaseFalls4-5-11Wiki.jpg Now how can I copy it into the article? Cognita (talk) 05:05, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Easy -- you simply use the File:Whatever.jpg as the name of the file in any language WP. I went ahead and added your photo, it looks very nice. —hike395 (talk) 06:01, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I've worked mostly on text, fixing grammar here and there in articles, undoing vandalism. I don't know my way around the extras--the references, photos, and such. Cognita (talk) 06:43, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The shadow of Half Dome

[edit]

In the History section: "Camp Curry celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1999 and it still offers park visitors lodging in the shadow of Glacier Point and Half Dome."

Mentioning Half Dome here amounts to topological namedropping. Curry Village is WSW of Half Dome and far away and therefore not in its shadow. Maybe briefly, in the very early morning in midsummer, but even this is speculative. Yes, "in the shadow of . . ." is sometimes used figuratively. However, it shouldn't be used that way in this sentence, because Curry Village is literally in the shadow of the Glacier Point wall some of the time, and following Glacier Point with Half Dome implies that the Half Dome reference is literal as well. 21st century events need to be summarized

[edit]

These events were newsworthy, but are now past, and need to be summarized more for an encyclopedia article. The unfolding of the hantavirus disease over a few months needs to be summed up, as do the outcome of studies that determined how it was contracted. Have added the 2008 rockfall, because of its effects on structures, and the 2012 disease outbreak and deaths to the Lead.Parkwells (talk) 16:04, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
