Early production numbers
[edit]Here is some info I found on a message board:
Push Buttons (hand built models, a few were actually built before January, in 1970)
Chassis 1001 - 1382 January 1971 - April 1971
Pre-L (The beginning of the assembly line models) Chassis 1383 - 2292 April 1971 - December 1971
Total 1292 cars in 1971 __________________________________________________
Pre-L Chassis 2293 - 4268 January 1972 - August 1972
Pantera L (These are officially called 1972-1/2 models) Chassis 4269 - 4839 August 1972 - December 1972
Total 2547 cars in 1972 ____________________________________________________
Pantera L (this is the short 6 month model year) Chassis 4840 - 5899 January 1973 - June 1973
Total 1060 cars in 1973 (only 6 months) _____________________________________________________
Pantera L (aligned with Ford's production year, then extended. Should have ended June 1974) Chassis 5900 - 7380 July 1973 - August 1974
Total 1481 cars in 1974 (14 months!)
After Ford production had ended Alejandro (with a new company, deTomaso Modena) kept assembling Ford-built bodies as the Pantera GTS into 1975, giving them chassis numbers 7501 - <7700. No Panteras appear to have been built in 1976, but in 1977 Carrozzeria Maggiora was contracted to build the new chassis cars, introduced from chassis number 9000 (some say this was in 1980, dubious). After about 90 Maggiora cars were built, from 1978 Embo took over, starting at chassis 9101. Originally only GTS Panteras were built, while 9150 was the first GT5 (May 1980) and 9375 the first GT5-S (S for steel, November 1984). 9000 series Pantera construction continued at Embo until 9562, with the Gandini-designed Pantera Si receiving chassis numbers 9601 - 9641. Embo-built cars all have a wider rear license plate opening to better suit the European market, as do some Maggiora models - although the Maggiora cars use a mixture of Vignale and new parts.
After 1973, Ford destroyed the stampings, leading De Tomaso to switch the engine bay from a single stamped part to several welded together bits. This change took place somewhere during 1977 as the original parts ran out. Maggiora was dropped as they had skimped on the quality of the steel and also used too thin issue for the centre of the monocoque, leading to an embarrassing recall (at the owners' expense!) and ending the relationship with Maggiora.
