what are the advantages of building bigger and bigger telescope?

it's a lot cheaper to build an array of small dishes than to construct one huge dish. what's the name of the technique for combining telescopes in an array that they act as one telescope? why is it easier to implement at radio wavelengths than at optical wave length?
