User:Jeni asked for more reliable references. Which parts of the article was she unahppy about? Which references were unreliable? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martinvl (talkcontribs) 22:06, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added some references. Are there any more statements that need references? Michael Glass (talk) 12:32, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As no-one has responded to the statement above, is there any objection to removing the tag about references? Michael Glass (talk) 06:46, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Response to DeFacto's changes

[edit]

Driver Location Signs are road signs – See pg 143 of Know your Traffic signs. In addition, page 19 of the document Driver Location Signs – Interim Requirements reproduces the authorization of the secretary of state as required under the TSRGD to erect driver location signs. Both documents are referenced in the article. Martinvl (talk) 07:41, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They're not signs in the sense of distance, direction, height or width signs. The numbers are unit-less as far as road users are concerned. That they happen to reflect kilometre indexes does not mean that they defy the requirement that distances be given in miles, yards, feet and inches - because they are not giving distance information to road users. -- de Facto (talk). 14:28, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like WP:SYN to me. Please read the whole article. Martinvl (talk) 15:38, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, not SYN. I believe (and see the discussion below), but I'm no expert so may well be wrong, that the TSRGD only mandates the units for road signs that are defined in it and that have numbers on them for which the units are significant to road users (such as speed, distance, direction, height, width signs, etc.), and not for all other unspecified signs (such as the DL signs in question) which can only be installed if the appropriate special exception paperwork is in place, and the units (if appropriate) will be specified there. -- de Facto (talk). 16:38, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Governing legislation

[edit]

I've read the article, and think that the 'Governing legislation' section needs some points clarifying. Is it actually the case that the "Interim Advice Note" (IAN) exists because the distances on the signs are derived from kilometre distances? I was under the impression that the IAN is required because the DL sign design isn't specified in the TSRGD, and so cannot be legally installed on the roads. As far as I know, the only requirements specified in the TSRGD with respect to the units used on signs is that the units used on the sign designs specified must be adhered to, and as the DL signs aren't specified (hence the need for the IAN) then the units, of course, haven't been specified either. -- de Facto (talk). 16:23, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have reworded the section. Martinvl (talk) 06:33, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

M32 execption to A/B in direction of incresing number

[edit]

There is a statement that the M32 is an example of an exception to rule that the location numbers increase on the A carriageway. Looking on Google streatview does not bear this out. On the M32 the A carriageway is Northbound towards London with increasing location number and decreasing junction number. So it's an execption to the Away/Back to London mnemonic, not the rule to A being in the direction of travel. Accordingly the footnote saying "for example the M32" should be removed and "(but not always)" should be marked example needed. Brian McCauley (talk) 22:24, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On reflection the footnote should just be moved. Or maybe it should be removed as it's just an example not a proper citation. Brian McCauley (talk) 22:39, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

alphanumeric location

[edit]

I've seen locations on UK motorways identified in the following format for Emergency Service use which seems to have some extra numerals compared to the location signs eg M5 8347A Could how these are decoded and how they map to the driver location signs be mentioned in the article? Distance marker posts

[edit]

Re the sentence Since at least 1980, motorways have had distance marker posts, aka Blakedale Posts, installed at 100 metre intervals alongside the hard shoulder. Assuming these are the posts like the one at the bottom of this image, they have existed since at least 1972. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:31, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
