Handbook of Northwestern Plants by Helen M Gilkey and La Rea J Dennis, Revised edition 2001, mentioned this fern. Page 25.

"Coastal wood fern. Rhizomes stout, covered by bright chestnut-colored scales; stipes shorter than the blades; leaves to 10 dm. tall, blades herbaceous to slightly leathery, pinnate-pinnatifid to 2-pinnate at the base, lance-ovate to deltoid-lanceolate in outline, acuminate, pinnae sessile, pinnules oblong, the margins doubly serrate to incised; sori large, orbicular; indusia persistent.
