ECW Championships first Champion

[edit]

i was looking on wwe.com and i noticed that it says that Shane Douglas was the first ECW Champion and not Jimmy Snuka??.. Here's where i found it http://www.wwe.com/classics/titlehistory/ecwchampionship/082794douglas — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.252.32.154 (talk) 14:16, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Before ECW was Extreme Championship Wrestling, it was Eastern Championship Wrestling. Shane Douglas became the first Extreme Championship Wrestling Champion on 27 August 1994. Snuka was the first Eastern Championship Wrestling Champion. Hope that clears things up. Donshotwell (talk) 16:02, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really confused now, i now found that jimmy snuka indeed held the title which means he was the first ECW Champ??..... another link http://www.wwe.com/superstars/jimmysnuka Please someone clear this for me because i'm confused and unsure of who the first ECW Champ was — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.252.32.154 (talk) 14:33, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It was a regional Heavyweight title before Shane had it, but got world status when Shane, as champ, also won the NWA World title.

Championship name

[edit]

As information, the WWE does not call their version of this championship a "World heavyweight" championship but just the "ECW Championship" instead. It is no longer viewed as having been a world championship at least not the WWE version. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.250.54.181 (talk) 00:40, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Description

[edit]

The description of the bankruptcy and related matters is inaccurate. I know this because ECW filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York and my law firm represented the bankruptcy trustee. I personally negotiated the temporary transfer of certain rights to WWE so that they could use ECW trademarks on a national TV show scheduled for the night that we completed the negotiations.Paul Heyman did not "declare bankruptcy." ECW, or its corporate holding company (I don't recall exactly) filed for bankruptcy, not Heyman personally. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.74.18.154 (talk) 03:09, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not a "World" championship belt

[edit]

WWE does not and did not acknowledge this belt as a "world" championship. On their website they simply call it the "ECW Championship". This should be edited somewhere. Wrestlers such as Matt Hardy, CM Punk, Christian, RVD, etc should not have this added as an additional "World Championship" reign of theirs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.38.208.77 (talk) 15:04, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Patently false. WWE promoted the title as the "ECW World Heavyweight Championship" upon its exhumation in 2006.[1] Later that year, it was renamed the "ECW World Championship".[2] By late 2007 it was simply the "ECW Championship", yes, but WWE continued to describe the belt as a "world" title.[3][4] 2A02:C7F:8E0C:6600:8144:9C60:A139:70BA (talk) 00:05, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The physical WWECW title belt read "World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion" until July 2008. Per the links provided above, it was referred to as a world title on WWE.com through its 2010 retirement. The company has never formally withdrawn recognition of the belt as a world championship, and even if they had, retconning/historical revisionism has no place in an encyclopedia. 5.68.197.161 (talk) 22:13, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just because it had the word "World" on it and was called the "ECW World Championship" by WWE at some points should not mean they acknowledge it as a legitimate world title. For many years WWE/WWF referred to the tag titles as the "World Tag Team Championships". The old WCW Television title had the word "World" on it. Do they count as world titles too? No, they do not. Let's be realistic, it is folly to think that belt which was defended and used on what was almost like a developmental type brand counted as a real/legit WORLD title. This would mean Matt Hardy is a former world champion in WWE not to mention superstars like CM Punk, Christian and RVD would get world title reign added to their resume. I vote to please remove it counting as a world title and to edit the Wiki's of the wrestlers who won them as having an additional world title reign. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.38.208.77 (talk) 23:43, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
