Coinage of the word "electrospinning"

[edit]

This is popularly ascribed to Reneker in the 1995 paper DOSHI, J. & RENEKER, D. H. (1995) Electrospinning Process and Applications of Electrospun Fibers. Journal of Electrostatics, 35, 151-160, but Yu.N. Filatov published a book, albeit in Russian, in 1977 entitled "Electrospinning of Fibrous Materials" (Neft' i Gaz Publishing House, Moscow, 1977). Any advances on Filatov in 1977 for the coinage? Nasier Alcofribas (talk) 19:34, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have not been able to find this book from 1977. But I can find one from 1997 on the author's group's website (http://www.electrospinning.ru/publ.html). Furthermore, a direct translation of the title seems to be "Electroformation of Fibrous Materials". Apoligizing for not being a user on the site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.225.29.254 (talk) 13:48, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First patent

[edit]

The article contradicts itself. Which patent was the first one? --Edcolins (talk) 13:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all - apologies if I haven't done this correctly, this is my first ever post! The first electrospinning patent was by Anton Formhals, US Patent 1,975,504 (1934). I hope to be able to add to the article once I get time (and learn the ropes!). --Invariable 12:46, 18 April 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Invariable (talkcontribs)
This talk seems to be outdated. However, regarding these early patents, I think it is necessary to state whether the patentees actually did produce fibers or they were just drawing an apparatus from their imagination. In many reviews this is unclear. I assume this is because it is considered to be obvious that they produced fibers, but I do not think it is. I am not claiming that they did not produce fibers, just that it should be stated that they did. If they did. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.144.63.11 (talk) 11:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the citation for flame-retardant fabrics

[edit]

it would be great if someone could check that. the preview in google scholar said that they'd created flame retardant electrospun materials, but i can't read the article itself. Apophenic (talk) 16:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Zeleny's Role

[edit]

How did Zeleny contribute to the development of electrospinning? Clearly, he was not the first to observe electrospraying, and the concept of electrospinning was known before his work as far as I can see from the early patents. How much room for theories is there between Rayleigh-Plateau and Taylor? Please do not see this as a polemic question. I just see that the history of electrospinning, as presented in many reviews, contains a number of examples of sources that are cited mainly because they always have been cited as "first examples". Should this article focus on the work that has actually influenced the development of electrospinning as it is today or should it also point out sources that have had less impact but preceded the commonly accepted key references? (Or more specifically: why cite Reneker every time we write about the technique?). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.144.63.11 (talk) 11:23, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
