The image Image:L'Anse-Saint-Jean flag.gif is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.

We need differentiated terms for "micronation"

[edit]

It irks me on this page, and in other writings about micronations, when people do not distinguish between:

  • 1) essentially one-person "vanity nations"/"home-made nations"/"personal nations", which exists as one house, a plot of land, a webpage, and maybe a tourist stand. Often with a zany tone, eccentric claims, and comedic symbology.
  • 2) "vanity nations" which grew into actual communities, and have had serious newsworthy activities. Sealand and Liberland would be examples.
  • 3) ideologically-, philosophically-, or faith-based communities, usually with a number of members, which seriously claim, or aspire to, a "national/state/governmental" identity. (e.g. Nation of Islam, Twelve Tribes Communities)
  • 4) small civic nation-states (Andorra, Monaco, Palau, etc.)
  • 5) stateless ethno-national groups, and organizations whose aspirations and symbology are closely representative thereof. Khmer Krom is not a "micronation". The Khmer Krom are a member of the UNPO! Also, the Champa ethnic flag, the Republic of New Afrika, Russell Mean's Republic of Lakotah, and the Murrawarri Republic.
  • 6) Monarchist organizations which represent families who are actually descendants of a formerly reigning monarchy.
  • 7) "Adventurer" states, such as the Kingdom of Araucania, which were unrecognized, but had some actual existence on the ground. Similar would be the filibuster states in Mexico and Central America.
  • 8) Governments in exile.

I realize there's some overlap and gradation between these categories. But my sense is that "micronation" is best confined to #1 and #2.

Basically, I would delete Champa and Khmer Krom from this page. And perhaps also New Afrika, Rep. of Lakotah, and Murrawarri Republic, and point the reader to Ethnic Flag://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_flag and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_active_separatist_movements — Preceding unsigned comment added by Traversetravis (talkcontribs) 07:29, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would also delete the Republic of Lakotah and Neutral Moresnet as the latter was a small condominium on the dutch-belgian-prussian border thus not a micronation and the former is more of an independance movement than a micronationCvkoning (talk) 11:20, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why don’t you add the flag of Kekistan?

[edit]

What’s the reason Kekistan is nit considered a worthy micronation deserving of a flag spot here? It is more famous than any micronation listed here, other than Nutopia. DErnestWachter (talk) 01:41, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a micronation. Acroterion (talk) 01:51, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Legitimately, Kekistan doesn't claim to be a micronation nor a physical embodiment of a space or location physically. Although one could argue that it may stand for a small (micro) self identified group (nation, national identity in such sense) in lines with it being a political or social movement on the internet, it isn't categorically the same with what with a micronation is. Nor is it tracked by reliable sources as such. Adog (TalkCont) 02:15, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am not arguing. Just trying to understand. Nutopia has no land but is a micronation. You do not need any space to be a micronation as evidenced by Nutopia. But Kekistan claims these areas:

The Temple of Jonesia on the Danube river, Central Europe / The three Kekistani provinces on the Danube / The Kekistani North African Territory / The Kekistani Antarctic Territory DErnestWachter (talk) 02:58, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, however, the fundamental argument is still that it doesn't claim to be a micronation, nor do reliable sources cover it as such. Adog (TalkCont) 22:52, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nutopia should be removed I think

[edit]

Acroterion who seems to be a Wiki admin told me that a conceptual country does not meet the requirements of being a micronation. But Nutopia is listed as being a conceptual country on the Wiki page devoted to it. And Nutopia makes NO territory claims. To be fair, it should be removed or an explaination given as to why it is being treated differently. Does anyone know why Nutopia is being given special status as a micronation w/o meeting the definition of one? Thank you. DErnestWachter (talk) 03:13, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

All micronations listed on Wikipedia must meet notability guidelines - coverage in major publications to indicate that they belong in a global encyclopedia. Personal projects aren't eligible. Acroterion (talk) 15:21, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zaqistan

[edit]

Can someone add Zaqistan? Flag Creator (talk) 09:21, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What evidence is there that the supposed flag (File:Zaqistan flag.png) is in any way 'official'? AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:26, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ephemeral?

[edit]

Are all micronations necessarily ephemeral? Some, like Molossia (surrounded entirely by, and in practice under the sovereign control of, Nevada in the USA), are relatively long lasting, although I accept that micronations do tend to fail a lot faster than more legitimate sovereignties.
