Article targeted for major re-write
[edit]This article has been targeted for a major re-write by one or more of the editors of the University of Florida Wikipedia Project, including achieving an "encyclopedic" neutral point of view, properly sourcing all factual material to reliable and authoritative sources (either on-line news sources or hard-copy publications), and uniform style and formatting consistent with the UF Wikipedia Project, all with the goal of satisfying the Wikipedia requirements for "Feature Article" status. Given the sensitivity of some UF-affiliated editors to changes to Gators athletics articles that they have placed on their "watch lists," your comments and input are solicited.
The ultimate goal is to eliminate any "rah-rah" aspects of the article, and let the facts and statistics regarding the Gators' basketball success speak for itself, so that the final product will reflect well on the University of Florida, as viewed by unaffiliated readers seeking information about the team, UF, UAA, etc.

SEC regular season / tournament championships
[edit]An anonymous user keeps changing all mentions of regular season SEC championships to just SEC championships. While the SEC does recognize the regular season basketball champ as the "official" champion, it's the tournament champion that receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. These dual championships can cause confusion, so this article has long differentiated between the two, as has the article listing SEC championships in all sports.
The IP user claims that using the phrase "regular season" diminishes the achievement. I disagree; it simply differentiates it for clarity. And, anyway, this article isn't supposed to be a PR piece for the Florida basketball program. I'd say its success over the past dozen+ years speaks for itself. Zeng8r (talk) 20:42, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
As the anonymous user, I am simply editing the page for clarity. By referring to a conference championship as the "regular-season championship," it creates confusion as to what the team actually won. There is actually no such thing as a "regular-season championship" in the SEC. There is a conference championship, and there is a tournament championship. Adding "regular-season" in front of the conference championship creates ambiguity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.4.204.135 (talk) 18:22, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
- As I pointed out, putting "regular season" in front of "championship" is the standard in articles about SEC basketball. To me, removing informational descriptions is the exact opposite of "clarifying". I'll wait to see if anyone wants to throw in an opinion before reverting, but your explanation just isn't very convincing, imo. Thanks for using the talk page, though. University of Florida's first black players
[edit]Why is there no mention of integration in discussion of this basketball program? The first black football players are being honored at the Auburn/Florida game today. Having been enrolled at that time it was painfully evident how backwards our institution was in this regard. Basketball was even later than football to integrate, mostly attributed to a racist coach. This may sound harsh, but as a white student, coming to grips with understanding my own racism, the symbol of these brave athletes was strong. There were many on campus who felt this injustice. Especially at a time of increased awareness of the lack of understanding the lingering effects of racism in our country, it is all the more important that this painful part of history not be ignored. I hope that the re-write of the post will include this subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:282:903:F010:A494:2B71:E99B:8430 (talk) 15:28, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
