Review

[edit]
  • Thank you. I just realized I have yet to address your concern over specific page numbers. I will do my best to get to this within the next couple of days, as I was about to log off. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 03:46, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Below is my review. Let me know if you have any questions! MX () 15:06, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Early and personal life

[edit]
  • Arana was born to a lower-middle-class family in 1904 or 1905 – I found the source for his DOB/POB. It was December 5, 1905, in Villa Canales. His parents were Ángel María Arana and Margarita Castro (which means his full name is Francisco Javier Aranas Castro). Please update the article with this information.
    Great find, thanks: added.
  • He was 39 years old in 1944, suggesting that he was born in 1904 or 1905.[1] – No longer needed since we found the info above.
    Removed.
  • Around the time of the revolution – link to Guatemalan Revolution?
    Done, tweaked a little.
  • a staff member at the American embassy described his politics as nationalist – What do you think if red-linking "Embassy of the United States, Guatemala City" over the "American embassy" phrase? We have one for Mexico so I don't see why not.
I don't think it's likely that that will be created anytime soon, but not a bad thing in principle, so done.

October revolution

[edit]
  • October revolution – Do we capitalize "Revolution" or not? I've seen both for this so not sure.
What I've tended to do is capitalize for Guatemalan Revolution (which is almost its only name) but not October revolution, which is more of a descriptive term than a name.
  • Ubico appointed Federico Ponce Vaides the leader of a three-person junta which would lead the provisional government. – comma afer Vaides
Uh, I don't think that's correct...Ponce Vaides was appointed leader of the junta...I've taken out the "the" to make it cleaerer.
  • the congress to appoint him interim president. – Link and capitalize congress: Congress of Guatemala. Would the title be capitalized too?
Done. I don't think this would be capitalized, as I don't think it's an actual title.
  • Ponce pledged to hold free elections soon, – per WP:RELTIME, remove "soon".
I'm afraid I don't agree with this: the section advises against these terms as applied to the present. In this case, Ponce was promising elections soon, rather than making a general promise of elections.
  • By now, the army was disillusioned with the junta, and progressives within it had begun to plot a coup. – per WP:RELTIME, change "now" to something else. Consider linking/capitalizing Guatemalan Army.
Mostly done, but see note above about RELTIME: again, this is necessary to maintain a logical flow when specific dates are absent. They are relative to other events in the text, not to the present time, and so those phrases are not going to get outdated with the passage of time.
  • became members of a new three-person ruling junta, with Arana, as the ranking army officer, becoming its senior member. – unlink "junta" here and link it on the first mention in previous paragraphs.
    Done.
  • after Juan José Arévalo was elected president in December 1944 – should "President" be linked and capitalized?
    Done.
  • and so the new Guatemalan constitution, created in 1945 – How do you feel about red-linking an article to Constitution of Guatemala (1945)? Spanish Wikipedia has it redlinked, see here.
    Done, good idea.
  • than that of the defense minister. – link to Ministry of Defence (Guatemala)
    Done.

Chief of Armed Forces

[edit]
  • car accident and incapacitated for a while – does source say for how long?
    I'm afraid not.
  • next presidential election, scheduled for November 1950 – link to some part of the text to Guatemalan presidential election, 1950
    Done.
  • (illiterate women, for example, were still denied the vote) – I think this flows better as a footnote. Let me know if you need help creating one. A source would be needed for this claim too, but I will infer it is the same once used later.
It is indeed the same source. I'm not keen on pushing it to a footnote: I think it's crucial to note that the popular reform which formed the basis of support for Arbenz and Arevalo did not go quite that far.
  • In the 1948 congressional election – seems link this is the article: Guatemalan parliamentary election, 1948, please link.
    Done.

Pages

[edit]
  • As I mentioned in the talkpage, I think this article will help readers more if the pages were more accurate (instead of taking 25 pages all at once).
    Done.

Absence of Spanish sources

[edit]
  • Well, this is a complicated one. The article is well-written and covers the subject from an early life → military career → politics → death stage(s), which means it is comprehensive. I'm no expert in Guatemalan history, but I would assume that Spanish-language sources would provide more detail for this biography. Have you tried cross-referencing the information with the Spanish article here? It seems to be well sourced. I would recommend you add certain Spanish-language sources as "Further reading" in a section, like this book here. If you plan to take this to FA, I would think you would need more Spanish sources, but you're good for GA. If you need access to books not available online, let me know. I have a interlibrary loan access at the University of Texas.
This is a good point, but I have no plans of taking this to FAC as of now; there's just not enough material, and I am hampered by my Spanish, which is very basic. I'm also not keen on using references of which I am unable to evaluate reliability. I've added the further reading entry: if you have access to the book, I wonder if you could add publisher information.

Infobox

[edit]

Unsourced content

[edit]
  • Carlos Paz Tejada and Daniel Corado – They are mentioned in the infobox but nowhere else. Please add them in the body paragraphs with a source, that way we can keep them in the infobox per WP:INFOBOXCITE.
I've just dumped a lot of that. en.wiki has an unhealthy fascination with overly detailed infoboxes, and much of this is not going to be sourceable without digging around in Spanish language primary sources which are likely not available outside Guatemala.
  • Army Colonel – this word is used in the intro and infobox, but there are no sources for such title. Please add it in the body paragrahs below with a source (I personally would refrain for adding sources in the lead, per WP:LEADCITE).
Fixed. Gleijeses says he was a Major, I mixed that up, somehow...

Tenure as Interim President

[edit]
  • Do you think the infobox should include his tenure as Interim President? One of the categories has him as President, and he technically was for a short period. I'll leave it up to you.
Never mind, seems like "Head of State and Government of Guatemala" is the Interim President tenure I was looking for.
As you said, this isn't necessary.
  • @MX: I believe I have addressed all your comments, though I've disagreed in a couple of places. Let me know if there's anything further. Thanks for a thorough review. Vanamonde (talk) 03:47, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
