Frederick Hitch was illiterate

The internet says that he was illiterate, and this is proven by his enlistment form.

This has not survived, and is not at The National Archives. Moreover, he later wrote an account of his time at Rorke's Drift.

Whilst the spelling could be improved upon, I am not seeing evidence to support him being illiterate. Given he was born prior to the Elementary Education Act 1870, and would have been "school leaving age" when it came into being, there is a strong possibility that his literacy skills were under-developed.
